He called, and his call stirred those at rest;
He called and his call roused the heedless,
And he cried out, and his cry alarmed those who felt safe.
And cried aloud, startling the tranquil with his cry.
أَخوone afflicted with وَصَبٍsuffering ماnot إِنat all (emphatic) يَحمُّdraws near اِنقضاؤهits end
وَذوand one with أَرَبٍa need ماnot إِنat all (emphatic) يَحينcomes due قَضاؤُهُits fulfillment
A man beset by suffering whose end never draws near,
A brother whose ties will not defend when they are severed,
And a man with a need whose fulfillment never comes.
A kinsman whose kinship avails naught when it is tested.
بِهِin him مِنfrom بَنيthe sons of مَصرٍEgypt عَناءٌsuffering مُبرِّحٌexcruciating
فَياso, oh لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether يَزولُceases عَناؤُهُhis suffering
He suffers excruciating anguish because of Egypt's sons;
From Egypt’s folk he brought distress that vexes grievously.
So, would that I knew: will his suffering cease?
Would that I knew, will his distress be ever dispelled?
أَماsurely إِنَّهُindeed he لَوif كانَwere يَشفِيsoothes غَليلَهُhis burning anguish
بُكاءٌweeping عَلىover مِصرٍEgypt لَطالَwould surely last long بُكاؤهُhis weeping
Surely, if his burning anguish could be soothed
Nay, but tears for Egypt will never assuage their anguish
By weeping over Egypt, his weeping would last long.
If they wept for her, their weeping would last forever.
تقسَّمهاdivided her among themselves الأَقوامُthe peoples لاno ذوone possessed of حَمِيَّةٍzeal
فَيَحميand so defends وَلاnor واقٍa protector فَيُرجىso may be hoped for وَقاؤُهُhis protection
Peoples have divided her among them; there is no man of zeal
The tribes partitioned her, none with loving heart to shield her
To defend her, nor a protector whose protection one might hope for.
And ward her – none trusty to be hoped for and relied on.
وَماand not مِصرُEgypt إِلّاexcept مَوطنٌa homeland نَحنُwe أَهلُهُits people
عَزيزٌdear عَلَيناto us أَرضُهُits land وَسَماؤُهُand its sky
And Egypt is but a homeland whose people we are;
Egypt’s only our homeland, precious to us her land and skies.
Dear to us are its land and its sky.
Blest was her bliss before adversity, but blest too its advent after.
فَياso, oh حَبّذاhow dear قَبلbefore الشَقاءِmisery نَعيمُهُits bliss
وَياand oh حَبّذاhow dear بَعدafter النَعيمِbliss شَقاؤُهُits misery
Oh, how dear its bliss before misery,
Some settled in her, but we wearied of their settlement;
And oh, how dear its misery after bliss!
Would that settling were without tedium of settlers!
ثَوىdwelt فيهِin it أَقوامٌpeoples مَلَلناwe wearied of ثَواءَهمtheir stay

وَياand oh رُبَّmany a ثاوٍdweller لاnot يُملُّis found tiresome ثَواؤُهُhis stay
Peoples have dwelt in it; we have wearied of their stay;
Staunch was she, disdaining humiliation by an aggressor -
And oh, many a dweller whose stay is never wearisome!
Would that I knew where her staunchness went, where her pride!
لَقَدindeed كانَused to يَأبىrefuse أَنto يَذِلَّsubmit لغاصبٍto a usurper
فَياso, oh لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowledge أَينَwhere ضاعَwas lost إِباؤُهُits proud defiance
Indeed, it once refused to submit to a usurper;
Would that I knew where her might departed and her glory,
So, would that I knew: where was its proud defiance lost?
Her repute and pre-eminence fled!
وَياand oh لَيتَif only شِعريmy knowledge أَيَّةًwhither بانَdeparted عِزُّهُits might
وَأَينَand where تَولَّىwent away مَجدُهُits glory وَعَلاؤُهُand its eminence
And would that I knew: where has its might gone,
She was guarded by men mighty and proud;
And where have its glory and eminence gone?
Through the caprices of time they were her protection.
لَقَدindeed كانَused to يَرعاهwatch over it رِجالٌmen أَعِزَّةٌmighty

Indeed, mighty men once watched over it;
They who beat back from her preserved her repute
Through them it found shelter from the vicissitudes of time.
With the firm resolve that none could make recoil.

They fought on its behalf and so safeguarded its honor,
My countrymen, provoke her not against you,
With a keen sword of resolve whose cutting force cannot be checked.
For her wrath and her favor are not equal.
بَنيO sons of وَطَنيmy homeland لاdo not تُسخِطوهُanger it عَليكموagainst you all

O sons of my homeland, do not arouse its anger against you;
My countrymen, put cowardice far from you,
For its anger and its contentment are not alike.
For it will overwhelm you along with its misfortune.
بَنيO sons of وَطنيmy homeland خَلّواforsake التَخاذُلَmutual desertion إِنَّهُindeed it is

O sons of my homeland, forsake mutual desertion; it is
Your scourge, sweeping you away, and the homeland's scourge.
