    ما هَكَذا الأَحكامُ وَالحُكّامُ

    Every day, a new law and a new order;

This is not how laws and rulers should be.

    تَنتابُها الأَدواءُ وَالأَسقامُ

    Twenty years, and the land is sick;

    Diseases and ailments assail her.

The physicians surely know the illness that

Left the patient melting away in pain.

And a physician may well deceive his patient,

So that, through him, the illness returns incurable.

How can Egypt be healed of her diseases,

Or how can her glory be hoped for and sought,

While the reformers, as you know, and her people

Sleep heedless of her, despite the caller's rebuke?

    And when souls' desires multiply,

Writers and pens suffer because of them.

O state that raised over our homelands

A banner beneath which the banners are lowered!

Where are the covenants you sealed,

If you ever sealed a covenant at all?

    يا هَذِهِ نَقضُ العُهودِ حَرامُ

    You paid no heed to our pledges, so you broke them;

O you, breaking pledges is forbidden!

Twenty years did not suffice you, and thus

The years come and go after them.

Your stay has lengthened, and you are unchanged; it would not

Have lengthened, this stay of yours, but for ignorance.

    وَكَذا يَكونُ الجِدُّ وَالإِقدامُ

    Endure, for the ignorant cannot endure;

And such are earnestness and daring.

The earth is yours, and the sky is an ally

To you; the nights and humankind are servants.

O nation whose eyelids slumber has sewn shut,

Rise, for dreams have brought you to ruin.

Rise, for no sleeper guards what is sacred,

And a heedless person is wronged and oppressed.

Rise, for your sleep avails nothing, while the foes

Stand awake around the protected land.

How wondrous this Nile: how ungrateful we are to it,

Yet kindness and generosity from it endure!

If it repaid us for our evil deeds,

Burning thirst would have destroyed those souls.

But they are the forefathers' kin, and still

Ties of kinship are honored among the likes of it.

Two things, both of which destroy nations:

Slumber heedless of homelands, and surrender.

If the sleepers' time to rise does not come,

Then farewell to them and to the land.
