    Egypt, remember your young man among the immortals,

    And describe immortality to everyone who loves you.

    Mumtaz, one of the martyrs of love for you, never yearned

    Except for you, nor did he love anyone else.

    A passionate lover who lost his life for love of you,

    Yet he preserved his love and cared for you.

    When he saw you—for life and its sweetness

    Thirsting—he melted his youth and gave you drink.

    باللهِ هل نَقَع الصَّدى وشفاكِ

    This is the drink of those who give their lives;

    By God, did it quench your thirst and heal you?

    Do you remember, despite separation and its vicissitudes,

    What he bestowed on you of his chaste love?

    Do not forsake, O Egypt, the memory of a yearning lover,

    Distraught with love, who never forsakes remembrance of you.

    حَيِّ الشَّهيدَ ورَدِّدي نجواكِ

    He whispered to you, ever uttering a fresh greeting;

    Salute the martyr and repeat your whispered words.

    Salute genius: you found it, and it gave you some of

    Its fragrant breaths; you lost it, and it grieved you.

    Men's virtues adorned him, and he adorned them,

    And you yourself encircled the radiance of both with your own.

    He plunged into the fray, shielding you from harm's onslaught,

    And safeguarding your domain from the ravages of calamities.

    ما خان عهدكِ ما أعان عِداكِ

    Never did he stray for a day from Mustafa's law;

    He never betrayed your covenant, never aided your foes.

    That is the law—not the delusions of a group

    Who did not know the murderous usurper's nature.

    For anyone who does not understand what I say, here are

    Sorrowful Egypt and the weeping youth.
