Congratulations, Abu Sufyan: the stored treasure is no small thing,

nor is the reward cut short, nor are you cheated.

It is the gain ordained for none but one favored with success,

who has a blessed presence in the thick of battle.

You carried your eye, Abu Sufyan, in a hand

to which goodness is joined in every place,

and came to God's Messenger, your face not pale,

nor your shoulder turned aside, nor your heart sorrowful.

You say to him, 'My eye, which you behold,

was lost in God's cause, and faith was the spur.'

Then he said, 'If you wish, it can be restored

    by the power of a Lord whose command is kāf and nūn;

and if not, another eye awaits you with Him, if you meet Him,

and that is a promise guaranteed with your Lord.'

So you preferred this one, then cast away the one

you had carried; nor is it right to prefer the lesser.

Its sister will follow it in the battle with the Romans,

when its time comes after that.

So good upon good, and a blessing increased

by a blessing from God, its secret hidden from you.

Congratulations, Abu Sufyan: the spear is not grieving,

nor the sword distressed, nor resolve weakened.

Your gift in battle—its like has not been granted

to any man but one true in valor and trustworthy.
