    وحَيِّ من نُورهِ ما كان مُدَّخَرا

    Commune with the martyr, and address the legacy he left behind;

    And salute the light of his that had been held in reserve.

    A light the ravages of time had folded away awhile,

    Then they cleared, and it spread, enfolding the horizons.

    And the sign of truth is that nothing overcomes it:

    Who can overcome God, or who can repel fate?

    O banner, whose bearer is looked to with hope

    For a battle that terrifies generations and ages!

    My salute to you is a soul that knows no rest

    Until it sees the Nile neither bitter nor murky.

    Poison is sweeter than water defiled

    By the enemy’s hand, for a soul that guards against harm.

    And death is sweeter than a life embittered

    By the bite of fetters, for a people that scorns idle talk.

    لا تخلعِ النّقعَ حتّى تَلْبَسَ الظَّفَرا

    Advance, Ali, and march with the troops, charging forward;

    Do not cast off the battle-dust until you don victory.

    أما ترى الشرَّ أمسى يَغمرُ البَشرَا

    March as a warrior whose armies engulf the world;

    Do you not see that evil now engulfs humankind?

    Indeed, the ruthless one among the tyrants never ceases

    To cast sparks of his tyranny upon the earth.

    Strive against the Saxon tyrants with steadfast patience,

    Until you see the vanquished homeland victorious.

    Long has this coexistence lasted; the Pyramids are distraught,

    Almost perishing of vexation at the long wait.

    And the Nile—were hope in God not restraining it—

    Would be overwhelmed by grief’s assaults and burst into flame.

    فَخُضْ إليه خُطوبَ الدّهرِ مُبتدِرا

    You are our hope for a day that will not fail us;

    So wade through time’s ordeals toward it, hastening ahead.

    فَولِّهِ وِجهةً يقضي بها الوَطرا

    The people around you march wherever you send them;

    So set them on a course by which to fulfill their desire.

    Indeed, we have endured anguish

    That weakens massive rocks; the final reward is for those who endure.
