Bid your kin farewell and go about your momentous mission.

By God, son of Umayr, what a man you are!

Go as envoy with the letter; honor enough for it

that one of the noblest messengers bears it.

O bearer of the inscribed mountain, take it up!

Who but you—may God protect you—is fit for that mountain?

To Heraclius, before whose throne have paused

the haughty kings, approaching him deliberately.

Gazes turn back from his crown, humbled,

and look upon him only in dread.

Go to him, son of Umayr; you will find him

only a worthless man among worthless folk.

    وما جلالةُ غاوي الرأيِ مُختبلِ

    You are greater than he in all his majesty;

what majesty has a deranged man of misguided judgment?

He knows religion only as temptation and desire,

blind in aims, horizons, and paths.

    فاذهبْ إليه وخُذْهُ غيرَ مُحتفلِ

    This is the letter of God's Messenger, warning him;

go to him and confront him without deference.

Hold, Shurahbil! May you never be greeted, you man

who, when bent on evil, neither cares nor heeds!

Openly savage, an aggressor whom nothing befits

in blame but the vilest example.

An outburst of ignorance's impulses incited him,

holding back nothing of raging fury or madness.

He struck down Ibn Umayr, valiant and heroic,

who blunts, amid battle's terror, the might of the bravest hero.

Alas for the bound captive, whose lifeblood the sword draws

outside any raging battlefield or combat!

We set out seeking God; so race onward,

as men eagerly seizing the good and grasping its chances.

Though the earth should shift, or its regions change,

with all the peoples upon it, we would not change.

There are two paths: either victory that we attain,

or everlasting Paradise, with the finest hospitality.

We do not fight by thousands we assemble,

a full thousand matched against a thousand heroes.

We fight through the faith whose

banners assured victory in our earliest days.

But for Abd Allah's words, there would not have lifted

those shrouds; and but for God, he would not have spoken.

They girded on resolve for battle and armored themselves

with such true valor as dispenses with stratagems.

They advanced; had the lofty mountains swayed in terror,

their ranks would neither have quaked with fear nor swayed.

O Mu'tah, endure the horrors patiently!

Impossible! Such a thing is beyond endurance.

Jinn of battle—their onslaught grows fiercer

on ground where even jinn, seeing it, would not charge.

Their commander kept flinging his lifeblood forward,

striking at death in its crooked fangs.

    تلك المواردُ ليس الغَمْرُ كالوَشَلِ

    He entered watering places, deep pools of its terrors;

those watering places—deep water is not a trickle.

One who wades into war, its billows overflowing,

is not like one who skirts it for fear of getting wet.

O Zayd, you have fulfilled God's due; press on along

the path of those who passed before, and pass on.

They returned to the finest abode, whose dweller has

no homecoming or return to awaken grief.

There the wise man forgets the abode of sorrows,

and encompasses the dwelling of sickness and disease.

You strove for God, pleasing Him and aiding Him,

never meeting weariness or boredom for a day.

    فَاغْنَمْ ثَوابَكَ وَالْقَ الصَّحْبَ في جَذَلِ

    This is what God foretold to the Messenger;

claim your reward and meet your companions joyfully.

And you, Ja'far, whose presence is hoped for,

take the standard and surpass the utmost hope.

Here is your steed; its nature has not changed,

nor has it accepted any substitute for a noble creature's loyalty.

You hamstrung it and took to the ground, keeping it from

places of dishonor, out of jealous care and possessiveness.

You honored it, denying the enemy its aid,

and guarded yourself against reproach and blame.

You advanced on foot across the severed limbs, plunging forward,

while men lay felled, one after another.

You lost your right hand, and the standard shifted onto

your left, with neither bend nor flaw in it.

Until it too fell; then you made your chest its resting place,

as though it were an inseparable part of it.

It clasps it like a thirsty-souled lover, made ardent

for one who prolongs his thirst, through the delight of kisses.

while you were too occupied to heed your spilled blood.

as though the ordeal neither weighed heavily nor terrified.

You met your death in a raging, storming battle,

hot in its breast, its bright swords and spears athirst.

    أَعْطَتْكَ سَوْرَةَ مَجدٍ غيرِ مُنْتَحَلِ

    You gave it a soul from yourself, unweakened;

it gave you an upsurge of glory, not falsely claimed.

Yours are virtues whose wonders cannot be measured,

filling the battlefields, never known or imagined.

and if you see deaths roaming, roam among them.

today is the day of the Romans' deaths—so improvise!
