    Are those the places where the oppressed fell?

    What, then, of the guides, the reformers?

    Answer, Denshawai; for if you are

    At a loss for an answer, we are not.

    You are filled with sorrow, so you will find no solace,

    And you will not cease lamenting and groaning.

    They assailed you with searing calamities,

    And with horrors of every kind, hurtling down.

    You taste torment while they are drunk,

    They sing to the gallows, at their ease.

    تُجاوِبُهُ نُفوسُ الهالِكينا

    When you rejoice, revelry calls out to them;

    The souls of the dead answer it.

    Widows and orphans circle them,

    Crying out and shedding hot tears.

    And the whips turn them toward men

    At humiliation's dumping ground, torn to pieces.

    تَطيرُ جُلودُهُم مِمّا لَقينا

    Those men's hands assailed them in turn as they lay stricken;

    Their skins fly off from what they have endured.

    When the spilled blood flows from them,

    You see their clothes red and black.

    تُريكَ سُطورُهُ الظُلمَ المُبينا

    On their bodies is a clear mark;

    Its lines show you the manifest injustice.

    Pages you inscribe with whips—read them!

    And say: 'By God, what hands the writers have!'

    And a woman asks: 'Have the people no protector

    To shield them from what we witness, or shield us?'

    فَظُنّي الخَيرَ وَاِنتَظِري اليَقينا

    Be patient; your Lord has already taken note of it;

    So expect good, and await certainty.

    O Fatim, the weak indeed have a Lord

    Who grants them victory over the tyrants.

    فَما قَنَعَ الرُماةُ بِما رَضينا

    We were content for the pigeons to be quarry;

    Yet the shooters were not content with what we accepted.

    They would have nothing but lives; we could do nothing

    But voice the plaint of the weak and helpless.

    They deal out death to some,

    And decree torment for others.

    They melted the mothers in sorrow and anguish,

    And brought fatherhood and sons to ruin.

    A judgment unbalanced by panic and fear,

    Yet those who panicked deem it sound.

    The sun's victim has none but us to blame—

    So hurrah for the just judges!

    Is it on a charge of fanaticism—a falsehood—

    That the usurpers are permitted to shed our blood?

    Those men say: 'Reform and justice!'

    By the reformers' lives, we have indeed suffered!

    فَلَم نَدَعَ الكِفاحَ وَلَن نَلينا

    Sons of the Thames, be as you please;

    For we have not abandoned the struggle, nor will we yield.

    Take your supporters; we regard them

    As the buried malady afflicting us and our people.

    They are the enemies; we are not their kin,

    Nor are they our kin in adversity.

    We have condemned your rule; when shall we see you

    Saddling up, bidding us farewell?

    فَما نَسِيَ الحَمامُ وَلا نَسينا

    Leave off talk of concord and what follows it;

    For the pigeons have not forgotten, nor have we.

    كَذَبتُم أُمَّةً تُحصي السِنينا

    You claimed that your appointed time was near;

    You lied to a nation that counts the years.
