You came to the Messenger of Allah, following his religion
and choosing the best provision among those who take supplies.
And preferring the best provision for the one who stocks

For you, O Hajjaj, Allah - you became a polytheist in the evening
and by morning you called upon Him, devout and affirming His oneness.
And in the morning you call Him pure and monotheistic

He will forgive what ignorance you did in the pre-Islamic days
on nights when you refused to have Him obeyed and worshipped.
Nights that refuse to be obeyed and worshipped

It would harm you, I fear the hostile tribe

In Mecca I have much wealth, scattered about;

I fear it may go to waste and be lost.
I'm afraid it will be lost and missed

I will conceal my Islam and malign you, for they
I will hide my Islam and harm you, they
are people who harm none but those who find guidance.”
Are the people who do not harm anyone unless guided

And I went, while you courted them and soothed their hearts,
And you were inclined to befriend them and soothe their breasts
with a foolish tale that captivates the dull-witted fool.
With lies that seduce the stupid fool

You say, “The Jews have triumphed and won
You say the Jews have won and attained
an assured victory over the illustrious conquerors.
Over the young conquerors a supported victory

They raided so they repelled them and Muhammad spent the evening
a captive with their chiefs, not to be ransomed.
A prisoner of their masters, irredeemable

Spreading it as lies and gossip echoed

The Muslims' minds reeled, and they became
And the minds of the Muslims were confused, so they became
bewildered, seeing life as dust-gray and wretched.
Perplexed, seeing life gloomy and woeful

لَدُنْ جَمَعوا مِن مالِهِ ما تَبَدَّدا
And their bearer of glad tidings pleased those who had lost the way,
And the misguided were pleased, they lost the way, their warner
when they gathered up his scattered wealth.
Since he gathered from his money what was squandered

وأَعْيَا على العبّاسِ أن يَتَجَلَّدَا
Everyone who was a Muslim took grief as his provision,
Every Muslim prepared worries
and al-Abbas found it beyond him to bear up.
And Al-‘Abbas was tired of showing endurance

So he sent word: “What is this that you are saying?
So he sent, what is this you are saying
Speak the truth, Hajjaj, and with it quench my thirst.
Tell the truth, O Hajjaj, and make it widely heard

It is surely incumbent on Him to exalt Muhammad.”
It is true about Him that he honors Muhammad

He replied, “Yes. Return, lad, and tell him:
He said “Yes, go back, O boy, and tell him
‘Abu al-Fadl, rejoice, and await my coming tomorrow.’”
Abu Al-Fadl, rejoice and await my arrival tomorrow”

وَرَاجَعهُ مِن أمرِهِ ما تَعَوَّدَا
So, in overflowing joy, he freed his servant,
He freed his slave from overwhelming joy
and his usual spirits returned to him.
And changed his mind about what he used to do

And Hajjaj came to him with news of Khaybar,
Hajjaj met him with the news of Khaibar
and what he had concealed of the affair was now revealed.
So the one who hid the matter became exposed

ثَلاثَةَ أيّامٍ حِذاراً مِنَ الرَّدَى
He implored him not to spread his news
And adjured him not to spread his talk
for three days, for fear of death.
For three days, fearing harm

But when they passed, he startled the men with an apparition
that pained his enemies to behold and witness.
That was hard on the enemies to see and witness

bright upon both his cheeks, and his face blazed.
On his cheeks glistened radiantly, ignited

And what a grief, that made him rise and sit!
And woe to you from sadness that lodged and settled

He hurled news of the conquests at them, enraging them,
He cast at them the news of the conquests, so it angered them
and sent every insolent rebel back humbled.
And he repelled humiliated every stubborn transgressor

He deceived us just to secure his wealth,
He really fooled us so that he could win his money
and the wrong he deliberately devised has overtaken us.
So what he deliberately plotted befell us

Then we would repay him the most severe punishment

May the God of mankind requite them! What fault lies with a Muslim,
May the God of people reward them. What is the sin of a noble Muslim
noble in character, who did no wrong and never transgressed?
Who did no wrong or transgression?
