You have withheld your verse from me, my friend,

and one like you is not described as miserly.

So there is no love-poetry, no complaint against Time,

nor turning aside by the traces of ruined camps,

nor questioning a camp-ditch or hearthstones,

nor describing swift camel-striding or gentle trotting.

I opened the door to Egypt's men of letters,

and poems came to us like torrents.

Have you believed what I told you about them?

Then you seek no further proof.

Their language seems to hold wine within it,

and for those of taste, it toys with their minds.

The day passes without my hearing

a word from you through the long years.

If keeping in touch through meetings is difficult,

then is expressing longing through a messenger difficult?

Do we not have the post in every land,

and, at sea, wave-cleaving ships like horses?

By your life, openly forsaking a lovesick lover

is ugly, unworthy of one so fair.

We have accepted separation and what it has wrought,

for that is the will of the majestic Lord.

    But a reprover's gloating

is more harmful than despair of reunion.

    So if you have been kept busy, say something brief;

for we are content with a little from you.

And whatever you bring in verse or prose,

that is sweeter than sipping wine.

And whoever does good incurs no blame,

and there is no cause to blame a lover.
