وان كلحت ألفيت أهلك أعداء

Whenever your world smiles, your enemies befriend you.

When your world smiles at you, gratifying the enemy,

And if it scowls, you find your kin to be enemies.

And if it frowns, you find your own folk foes,

ففي وجهها داء الفتى ودواؤه

ففي وجهها داء الفتى ودواؤه

ولكنها من نقصها تؤثر الداء

ولكنها من نقصها تؤثر الداء

For in its face lie a young man’s ailment and his cure.

In its face lies the youth's disease and cure,

Yet because of its imperfection, it favors the ailment.

Yet out of its defect, it prefers the illness.
