O you who bid me farewell, tears almost come

between us, while passion’s blaze is fearsome.

How can I bear up after your departure, desolate,

and left with no desire and nothing to hope for?

Even an hour of your absence used to grieve me,

and I would think your return had become unlikely.

And now, by my longing’s reckoning, you have been absent

an age: long is the night of the afflicted.

If you forget me, I remember you; or if you grieve me,

I thank you; never will I turn away from you.

If only your phantom would visit me in sleep,

or my eyes would slumber when night comes upon me!

For a visit from it is dearer to me than

the delights of lasting union with anyone but you.

    ولقد يريح العاشقين ذهول

    In loving you, I am oblivious to the pain of separation;

and indeed, oblivion brings lovers relief.

You are the pupil of my eye, indeed, and the lifeblood

of my heart; I have no substitute for either.

If, for your pleasure, I gave every limb of mine,

I would still be miserly; what I gave would be little.

I find you pictured in all beauty,

and long do I linger over it in hope.

And when I hear of one unrivaled in beauty,

I know for certain that you are the one meant.

And I spend the night asking darkness’s wanderers about you,

if only the one questioned could help the questioner.

O you who charm me with your coyness, I have no

solace at all in life after your departure.

No one but you ever filled my gaze, nor did

my heart believe that anyone else was beautiful.

And when people are occupied with their worldly lives,

I am the one forever occupied with you.

In you lies proof of the Creator’s oneness,

if the philosopher finds such proof elusive.

I sent my tears with my letter, knowing

that no messenger can take the beloved’s place.

O you who reproach me for love, do not reproach me:

for haste is the root of this affliction of mine.

My heart preceded my eye in love,

so I fell into it, and my reproacher deserves reproach.

Alas for the time of union! I wonder:

will parting ever be postponed for just as long?

Were it not for remembering its bliss, I would have died of

longing; how many a victim slain by longing lies unavenged!

The hours of embracing—their memory cannot be erased,

nor their return to mind, ever, by any change.

And many a day of joy can make up for

a lifetime that stretches on amid the sorrows of separation.

So I shall surely wean my soul from its pleasures,

and let wailing grieve me after song.

O you who deny the ghoul’s reality, believe

that separation is, in truth, a ghoul.

Whoever has not tasted the pain of parting has no

    grounds, ever, to reproach Time.

For every calamity but this has solace for one of

sound judgment, and a remedy that guarantees consolation.

O burning pang of longing, dwell within my heart

as long as union with the one I love eludes me.

My heart’s throbbing is constant because you dwell there,

and perhaps my affliction will soon pass away.
