If the matter of passion troubles you,
If passion's path confounds your mind,
do not open your door to it,
Do not let it through your door.

nor let it occupy your daily pursuits;
Do not busy yourself with it,
it will afflict you with sorrow and anguish.
It brings sadness and worry galore.

Yet not a sip I tasted
left me unable to taste any food.
Of that which it offers up.

Love has a beginning,
Love itself has a beginning,
but you find no limit to it.
But you'll never find its end.

ويبلي الجلد والعظما
It makes the lover taste sleeplessness,
It makes the lover drink despair
and wears away the skin and bones.
And wearies body and bone.

Strange, wondrous thing.

To whom shall I complain or sing?

My longing has reached its peak,
this longing that blazes.
This fire burning night and day.

فكن يوماً معي سلما
May soul and body be your ransom;
For you I'd give my soul, my being,
so be at peace with me one day.
If you would be kind some day.

You have indeed gone too far in forsaking me,
You've been too harsh abandoning me,
and given passion command over my affairs.
Taking over my heart and mind.

No, by God, I do not know:
By God, I just cannot fathom
was it sorcery, or a dream?
If this is sorcery or dream benign.

Perhaps, just maybe, you will heal
an ailing man who seeks a cure from you,
This patient with love so gravely ill,

فقل تطفا وخذ مهما
and the fires of passion will be quenched;
Extinguish fires that passion fuels,
then say, 'They will be quenched,' and take whatever you wish.
Say "It is done" and end my pain, if you will.

Your languishing lover, O love, has come to this:
Tomorrow in anguish I shall come, O Love,
he has patience, but no heart,
With patience but no heart.

The sorrows you have caused from the start.
