مع خواء البطون والتبيان
If only I knew what good eloquence does,
Oh how I wish I knew what good is rhetoric
or exposition, when bellies are empty.
When bellies are empty and starved of wheat

And the arts of rhetorical embellishment, without food—
Of what use is eloquence, metaphors and rhyme
the uvulas and tongue seethe over them.

وبخسّ تخس تفتازان
Take a thousand metaphors for a loaf,
While stinginess and greed make the poor scoff
and for lettuce you can cheapen Taftazan.

O grammarians, rise! Nothing in
More than a meal shared between friends at ease
“Zayd struck Amr” will fill the dining table.

Where, where are the kebabs, the rice, and the bulgur,
Listen, for my empty stomach rumbles instead
whose abundance makes the serving bowls tilt?
The days of fine dining have gone away

The reign of cooked food has passed, and now comes
Now hunger reigns, and Lebanon decays
hunger’s turn, with Lebanon its mother.

What a disgrace! We send out the dinar,
Of hunger, when no food a human sustains
yet no one pays it any heed.

There is neither selling nor buying in a land
That's seen its plenty, now gripped in famine's hand
whose life has perished, while darnel lives on.

My stay in the monastery has grown so long that I seem
That even monks would not have taken me

Forbidden by bishops, as I know full well
among the things the metropolitan bishop forbade.

I am lonely, apart from humankind, all alone;
Seen by no one, neither he, she nor we
neither Ms. So-and-so nor Mr. So-and-so sees me.

A life that, had I been shown it in a dream,
Could not be consoled afterwards by music or melodies
melodies would not have saddened me afterward.
