علىon كلevery حرفletter منهof it حسنbeauty ورونقand lustre
An ornate letter came to me from a dear friend,
A letter came to me from my beloved friend
each of its letters bearing beauty and lustre.
Full of beauty and charm on every letter
تنشَّيْتُI grew intoxicated وجداwith longing إذas تنشَّيتI inhaled عرفهits fragrance
ولمand why لاnot ومنهand from it عاطرfragrant scent الوردof roses يعبقwafts
I grew intoxicated with longing as I inhaled its fragrance,
I was delighted when I recognized it
and why not, when the scent of roses wafts from it?
As fragrant as roses, it brings joy

Ah, how lovely that perfume, and how lovely
How wonderful is that scent, and how wonderful
the breeze that bears it toward me ahead of glad tidings.
The breeze that brought it swiftly to me
إلىto اللهGod أشكوI lament ماwhat لقيتI suffered منfrom النوىseparation
وحرّand the heat of جوىheartache كادتnearly بهbecause of it النفسthe soul تزهقexpires
To God I lament what I have suffered from separation,
To God I complain of what I suffered from my passion
and the heat of heartache that nearly made my soul depart.
And the burning agony that nearly made my soul perish
أقمتI stayed وأحبابيwhile my loved ones ابرواtraveled by land وأبحرواand sailed
علىin غيرother than ماwhat أهوىI desire وشمليand my circle مفرّقscattered
I stayed, while my loved ones traveled by land and sea,
I remained while my loved ones sailed away
against my wishes, with my circle scattered.
To places not of my desire, and I was left fragmented
فماso not زلتI ceased مذsince بانواthey departed حليفa companion of صبابةardent longing
إذwhen حانthe time came for سبحsailing كدتI nearly بالدمعin tears أغرقdrown
Since they departed, I have never ceased to be longing's companion;
Since they left I have been a friend of loneliness
when the time for sailing came, I almost drowned in tears.
When the time of farewell came, I nearly drowned in tears
ففيso in قلبيmy heart المأسورcaptive أدّخرI hoard الهوىlove
ومنand from طرفيmy eye المسجورbrimming دمعيmy tears أنفقI spend
So in my captive heart I hoard love,
In my imprisoned heart I harbor this passion
and from my brimming eye I spend my tears.
And from my fettered eyes my tears flow

غريبa stranger عليلailing فاقدbereft متشوقlonging
Sorrowful, gaunt, lovesick, expectant;
Gloomy, thin, passionate, longing
a stranger, ailing, bereft, full of longing.
A stranger, sick, lost, yearning

ولستand I am not بذيpossessed of سلوىsolace إليهto it موفقgranted success
Nor do I have patience whose reward can be hoped for,
I have no patience to await the reward
nor am I fortunate enough to find consolation.
Nor solace to reconcile me to fate

وهلand can يؤخذنindeed be taken يوماًever علىfrom الدهرtime موثقa binding pledge
Nor can my days be trusted to bring reunion;
My time cannot be trusted to reunite us
and can a binding pledge ever be exacted from time?
Can a pact ever be struck with fate?

I yearn to meet them, aching with longing,
I yearn to meet them desperately
whenever my night companion, the star, appears and unsettles me.
When my guiding star appears and stirs

And when the sun's horn rises, I fancy that it
And when the sun's light glows I imagine
conveys a greeting from them to me and speaks.
It brings me their greetings and speaks
فإنيfor I أرىsee فيهاin it علاماتsigns of حسنهمtheir beauty
وفيand in كلevery حسنbeauty ذكرa reminder of ماwhat القلبthe heart يعشقloves passionately
For I see in it signs of their beauty,
For in it I see signs of their beauty
and in every beauty, a reminder of what the heart loves.
And in every beauty, memories of those my heart loves

ولمyet not يبقremains فيهin it للتمنيin wishing مصدقa believer
I soothe a love-bewildered heart with hopes,
I entertain a heart roaming with wishes
yet no faith in wishing remains within it.
No faith remains in it for hopes

It flies with me toward them in longing, yet I
It flies with longing to be with them though I
am a captive of love for them, bound by my separation.
Am fettered by passion, a prisoner of love

And it flutters at the mention of their name, so that
And it flutters at the mention of their names
I imagine my very bed fluttering because of it.
I imagine my resting place trembling for them

فكيفso how وبابwhile the door of الوصلunion دونيagainst me مغلقis shut
And I shed tears that flowed even when they were near;
I shed tears that once flowed in their presence
how much more, with the door of union shut against me?
Now how can that be when the door is shut?

وحجبand the veils of النوىseparation بعدafter الوصالreunion تمزقare torn apart
When will God bring the lovers together for an hour,
When will God gather the lovers one day
and the veils of separation be torn apart after reunion?
And tear down the veil of separation after union?

And many a separation has sustained what
One who is far, may find in that distance
a yearning lover hopes for from nearness to loved ones.
What cannot be hoped for in the nearness of loved ones

For God has mysteries hard to explain,
For God has mysteries beyond explaining
and time has turns that distress and delight.
And time has changes that alternate beauty and grace
