Ah, O heart, why do you not melt

Over the loss of the beloved, with grief within you?

And O my tears, which soaked my collarbones,

Pouring over my affliction or raining down—

Help me, since I have no helper,

And time's calamities have tormented me.

And quench the fire of my sorrows and anguish,

Blazing within my breast, with flames aflare.

I call to the one I lost, but fruitless is

My call, now that he who answered has died.

Did death, that ghoul, steal him away,

Or else did a wolf slay him in the thicket?

And whichever it was, loss is my sworn companion,

And no other share is ever mine.

Hopes will leave me bereft of the soul

That longed for them; grief will keep me company.

I escaped the pursuer and the foe,

My sword a rod among their skulls.

Then fate overtook me with what no

Wary man or physician can cure.

And I returned as one bereft and anguished,

Who is crucified, not knowing who strikes him.

And what use are white, keen-edged swords,

And a mighty-framed, powerful, highbred steed?

Yet I cannot exact vengeance upon it,

Though one like me resolves and never fails.

And what use is my journey home alone,

With my beloved companion departed from me?

If earth should one day begrudge him

A grave, there is a spacious one within my breast.

And if death has left me his shirt,

Then that is Yusuf's shirt, yet he will not return.

Ah, O fire of my heart, increase forever

In flame: death is better for me, and sweet.

For I have no more joy in this world,

And my life cannot be sweet without him.

I shall spend my life's thirsty span in sobbing

For him, even if sobbing prolongs my grief.

And even if I dwell among my family,

After him, I am nothing but a stranger.
