You have arrived, with lives and kin offered for your ransom,

As the pearls of rain came in a season of drought.

Or as the wished-for came to Ghalib,

Or like earnestness's sword on the path of jest.

Or as faces of glad tidings spent the night

Rescuing the drowning in seas of reunion.

Or like the dawn of reunion, whose light shone

And banished a night that had arisen from reproach.

We strayed in comparisons out of ignorance; it was only

From seeing Ibrahim's excellence above all.

How, then, when the sea of knowledge's pearls has arrived?

And can you see any likeness to the sea's arrival?

So, as for the turns of days—away with them! Indeed,

I find the turns of days utterly miserly.

And he journeyed to the House of God, with glory at its height,

And through piety laid up a lodging of mighty heights.

Thus he gained spoils from those lands,

    Spoils of conquest beyond reach.

And he lavished on the lands a downpour of his knowledge,

And knowledge's branch ripened from that downpour.

    وللَّهِ من عزِّ حَوَتهُ مِنَ الرجلِ

    And the arch of his foot ennobled the cities;

And, by God, what glory they gained from that foot!

    يَفُوحُ شَذاها في رياضٍ مِنَ القَولِ

    And he left behind traces of the blossoms of praise;

Their fragrance wafts through gardens of speech.

And he returned as time returned to its people,

And journeying added excellence to his excellence.

Thus we had two feasts: the feast of his arrival,

And the feast ending the fast—marvel at this coming together!

    ليهتَزَّ بالأفراحِ من كان ذا عَقلَ

    Here is the imam of religion, arriving with gains;

Let whoever has reason thrill with joy.

And had your eyes looked on the day of his arrival,

You would have seen the earth's mouths truly smiling.

Hearken, O master, whose good deeds

Outnumber the waves, the raindrops, and the sand.

Joy to knowledge's army—its victory has come!

And glad tidings to ignorance's armies: stabbing and slaughter!

May you remain exalted despite the envier,

And your lofty glory's sweet scent is sweeter than reunion.

And all good fortune and goodness greeted you when

You arrived, with lives and kin offered for your ransom.
