You have slept, heedless of his longings,

and kept his bonds drawn tight for so long,

and [forgotten] a lovesick man's pledge,

while he remains true to his covenant.

He left dignity to those who wear it,

    and wandered mad with longing.

He abandoned his companions, though before

he was a loving brother to his companions.

The reproacher is bent on prolonging

    his blame and his quarrelling.

O you who make me drink separation's cup—

and death is less bitter than its taste—

do not fill it to the brim, for I

perish from less than its full measure.

Be gentle with a lovesick man's heart,

already poured out from the corners of his eyes.

Oh, woe to a heart! The unrelenting heat

    of parting keeps burning it.

And a slender youth, whom the moon

at its full resembles in radiance.

    There rose—to enchant whoever beholds

    him—the sun from his collars.

Sickness stands in the way of approaching him,

and death in the way of his embrace.

    ب يُطيل في إِطراقِهِ

    His glance is chaste, withheld from hearts;

he long keeps his eyes lowered.

Then, when he gazes, it is as though they

were bound to the fastening of his girdle.

When he smiled at my weeping,

he kept on flashing his radiance.

Then my weeping surged when the watcher returned,

    and persisted in drowning him.

Lightning from the sanctuary appeared before me,

so [I lay sleepless] at its flickering.

And the north wind passed by night, wafting his scent,

so the anguish of one longing for him blazed up.

I began seeking healing through it,

though my death lay in breathing it in.

So through it the sickness of love grew,

and I despaired of recovering from it.

How strange your coolness, O breeze,

when you are one of his lovers!

And among the wonders is that I

have lived on after parting from him.
