عَرَفتُI learned بِهِthrough it كَنَهُthe true nature of الأَسىgrief إِذwhen تَنَكَراbecame unrecognizable
Whose is this ruined dwelling, changed since its dwellers left?
Through it I learned grief's true nature, when it changed beyond recognition.
تَجرّdrag بِهِover it هَوجraging الرِياحthe winds ذُيولَهاtheir skirts
فَأَضحىso it became كَجسميlike my body بالياًworn away مثلَlike ماwhat تَرىyou see
The raging winds drag their skirts over it;
So it has grown worn like my body, as you see.

So, O neighbor of my loved ones, though you stirred my grief,
May the clouds water you, then drench you, early in the morning.

And a songbird lamented, stirring my anguish,
And its weeping made the tears of my eyes flow red.

And I felt a surge of longing within my entrails,
So I spent the night as though poison had coursed through my body.

وَتَشتَدand intensify آلاميmy pains إِذاwhen الصُبحُthe dawn أَسفَراshines forth
My wounds bleed whenever night's darkness deepens,
And my pains intensify when dawn breaks.

When I say the flood of tears has quenched my burning anguish,
Sighs of sorrow rise, and it flares again.

And if I say my tears have ebbed from all I have shed,
I recall the days of meeting, and they gush forth again.

They went far away, I would be more capable of patience than anyone else.

Love comes between the lover and his heart,
And longings expose him, however much he conceals himself.

Who, then, will aid a lover whose metal love has purified,
So that he has become a figure fashioned from passion?

And no one has distracted me from them, though I have melted in regret,
Except them; my pledge has not changed since they left.

As though my eyes see no one but them,
And were created only to weep, and I to stay awake.

And with my soul I would ransom one inconstant in his pledge, languid of eyelids,
With lowered gaze, a bewitching glance, and eyes of striking black and white.

Whenever he casts a glance at one suspicious of him,
He reveals secrets that had been concealed.

He chooses to forget a stranger who, whenever he recalls the protected grounds,
Is grieved at heart by their memory, and his heart breaks apart.

Who will take my side against long life in separation,
And against fortitude that has perished and patience that has changed?
