عُدturn back عَنfrom جُنونكyour madness أَيُّهاO القَلبُheart
قَدalready مَلَكَhave grown weary of you الأَحبابَloved ones وَالصَحبand companions
Turn back from your madness, O heart.
Loved ones and companions have already grown weary of you.
كَمhow long ذاthis الوَلَوعinfatuation وَكُلand every نارfire جَوىof longing
خَمدتhas died down وَنارand the fire جَواكَof your longing لَمhas not تَخبgone out
How long this infatuation? Every fire of longing
has died down, yet the fire of your longing has not gone out.
وَالامَand until when تَحييكrevive you المُنىhopes أَبَداًcontinually
وَيَميتكَand kill you الأَعراضrejection وَالعتبand reproach
And how long will hopes keep reviving you,
while rejection and reproach put you to death?
مَنwho مُنصِفيwill do me justice مِمَنagainst one who يَرىsees تَلفيmy ruin
وَيصدهُand keeps him عَنfrom رَحمَتيshowing me mercy العَجَبconceit
Who will grant me justice against one who sees my ruin,
yet is kept by conceit from showing me mercy?
طالَhas lasted long الصُدودthe shunning وَمالَهُand it has no سَبَبcause
وَقَضىand has doomed عَلَيَّme الوَجدyearning وَالكَربand anguish
Long has his shunning lasted, without a cause,
and yearning and anguish have undone me.
لَمdid not آتِcommit ذَنباًa sin يَقتَضيwarranting تَلفيmy ruin
أَترىdo you suppose المَحبةlove عِندَهُin his eyes ذَنبa sin
I committed no sin that would warrant my ruin;
do you suppose love is a sin in his eyes?
وَبِمُهجَتيand with my lifeblood مِنthe one who صَدَّturned away مُحتَجِباًveiling himself
عَنيfrom me فَزادَso increased الوَجدyearning وَالحُبand love
And with my lifeblood I would ransom him who turned away, veiling himself
from me; yearning increased, and love
إِزدادَgrew وَجداًin yearning كُلَماwhenever كَثُرَتmultiplied
مِنfrom دُونِهِbefore him الأَستارthe curtains وَالحجبand veils
grew more ardent whenever there multiplied
the curtains and veils barring the way to him.
لَولاbut for تَحجبُهُhis veiling himself لَماwould not have حملتborne
نَفسيmy soul الهَوانhumiliation وَلاnor صَباyearned القَلبthe heart
But for his veiling himself, never would
my soul have borne humiliation, nor the heart have yearned.
وضيمنand for one who (uncertain reading) يَصونguards جَمالُهُhis beauty أَبَداًalways
يَحلوgrows sweet الهيامlove's frenzy وَيُحسِنُand makes beautiful السكبthe shedding of tears
And [for one who] always guards his beauty,
love's frenzy grows sweet and makes the shedding of tears beautiful.
وَالحَرand the noble man لاnot يَسبيهِcaptivates him مُبتَذَلٌa commonplace person
وَإِلىand toward جَمالthe beauty الدونof the lowly لاnot يَصبوhe yearns
And a noble man is not enthralled by the commonplace,
nor does he yearn for the beauty of the lowly.
إِنif كانَis حُسنَكَyour beauty بِالصِيانَةby modest reserve مَحprotected (first fragment)
مياًprotected (final fragment) فَقَلبيthen my heart لِلأَسىto sorrow نَهبprey
If your beauty is protected by modest reserve,
then my heart is sorrow's prey.
قالَsaid الطَبيبthe physician وَقَدand already رَأىsaw سَقميmy illness
هَذاthis العَليلailing man مُتَيَمٌenslaved by love صَبconsumed with yearning
The physician said, having seen my illness:
This sick man is love's captive, consumed with yearning.
وَدَواءُهُand his remedy قُربnearness الحَبيبto the beloved وَإِنand if
لَمdoes not يَشفِهِheal him فَرضابُهُthen his saliva العَذبsweet
And his cure is nearness to the beloved; and if
that does not heal him, then his sweet saliva will.
ولِسانُand the tongue حاليof my condition قالَsaid وَآسَفيalas for me!
عزَّis hard to obtain الدَواءthe remedy وَأَعوَزand is wanting الطبُّmedical treatment
And the tongue of my condition said: Alas for me!
The remedy is beyond reach, and medicine is wanting.
هَيهاتfar from possible أَنthat يَبرىshould recover عَليلthe sufferer الهَوىof love
إِنَّindeed المُتَيمlove's captive داؤُهُhis illness صَعبhard to cure
Far indeed is recovery for one sick with love;
indeed, love's captive has an illness hard to cure.
وَإِذاand when المُحبthe lover صَفَتbecame pure سَرائِرُهُhis innermost feelings
لَمdoes not يَشفِهِheal him بَعدdistance وَلاnor قربnearness
And when a lover's innermost feelings are pure,
neither distance nor nearness can cure him.
