They abandoned me to my sleeplessness,

And my sickness and my solitude.

Who will aid a heart that burns all night

On embers of longing and separation?

A faint [lightning flash] appeared to me,

With white morning clouds before it,

Like a fire that has appeared

To the eye from beneath ashes.

It struck fire in the depths

    Of me, without any fire-striker.

It reminded the heart of a time

Gone by, sweet in its beginnings,

In Damascus—may it be watered by the bounty

Of my tears and the recurring rains!

    So it is between yearning,

    And fluttering and burning.

    How many nights we spent

    In companionship and togetherness,

In the belly of a thirsty man,

    And there the birds trill,

    Like a sound repeated.

And a handsome man, not to be trusted

    With the piety of worshippers—

    His eyes stripped from me

The robe of my piety and uprightness.

With enchantment and coquetry they stole

    My sleep and my heart.

In his absence, my patience betrayed me,

Just as my sleep had betrayed me.

So I was pitied by all who

    Knew me—even my sleeplessness;

And tears were shed for me by all who

    Saw me—even my enemies.
