The wind's breeze fanned my burning thirst as it passed by night.

A yearning lover tried to be patient, but could not.

It whispered secrets to my heart, which interpreted them.

And it melted with longing at their meaning, unaware.

And lightning flashed, passing over Dhu Salam,

so the eye's tears poured down throughout the night.

It kept kindling embers of anguish in my entrails,

until my whole heart scattered into sparks.

For God's sake, my reproacher, desist: it is no wonder

when a sorrowing man remembers and cannot endure.

An eye whose beloved had vanished from it wept,

and a despondent heart split from its own throbbing.

And you, my liver, melt in sorrow and anguish,

for what had been awaited has become unattainable.

I had been waiting for Time to help me

toward reunion, but Time granted me a journey.

And you, my companion, tell their story again,

for the heart has its own state whenever it remembers.

Their remembrance melts it at times and brings it back to life

at others; my hopes revive whenever it returns to life.

And you, our bygone life and our familiar abode,

may my tears and the rain clouds' tears water you at dawn.

And O nights with loved ones, which passed

in accord with our wishes, all of them enchantment,

for God's sake, will you return in dreams

to a lovesick man who keeps company with sorrows and thoughts?

    تَغيب عَنيَ أَحزاني إِذا حَضَرا

    I lament to God my yearning for a comforting beloved;

my sorrows vanish when he is present.

He gives me pure affection, to the exclusion of all others, always,

when Time is clear, and when it shows us murk.

Whenever I am mentioned to him, his tears overflow,

and what lay hidden of his secret becomes known.

Their languor has woven magic in his eyes,

with deadly charm, coyness, languid glances, and striking dark-and-white beauty.

And love has gathered in my eyelids and in my body

water and fire, sicknesses and sleeplessness.

My eye wishes to see none but him, and, if

it could, to gaze continually at his face.

But my tears obstruct it, and it is dazzled

by a ray from his cheeks that snatches away sight.

Many a night I spent in its darkness, offering him

the cup of reproach, until he softened and apologized.

I kindle the fire of his cheek with the fire of my reproach,

so the ember drips water whenever it blazes.

I have no excuse for living after parting from him,

but that is a matter that accorded with destiny.

O who will help a lovelorn stranger who has wept with grief,

and never forgot his beloved, even for a day, nor betrayed him?

Longings have left not a remnant of his patience,

and his poison has left no trace of his body.

Console yourself, O heart, for a life now gone and past,

or melt away: what was once before your eyes remains only a tale.
