تَغَيَّبvanished دُرpearls الزُهرthe bright stars فيin صَدَفthe shell الأفْقthe horizon
وَلاحَand gleamed جَبينُthe brow الصُبحdawn مِنfrom مَفرقthe hair-parting الشَرقthe East
The pearls of the bright stars vanished into the shell of the horizon.
The pearl of dawn hid in the horizon's shell,
And dawn's brow gleamed from the East's hair-parting.
And morning's brow emerged from the east's parting.
وَجَرَّand trailed نَسيمthe breeze الرَوضthe garden ذَيلَthe hem عَبيرِهِits fragrance
فنيهunclear; likely 'so it roused' لِلتَغريدto sing هاجعةsleeping الوَرَقthe doves (contextual reading)
And the garden breeze trailed the hem of its fragrance,
The garden's breeze dragged its train of fragrance,
So [apparently] it roused the sleeping doves to song.
Rousing the leaves to chirp with joy.
فَهاتَso bring أَدرpass round مِنfrom مُقلَتَيكyour two eyes سَلافةchoice wine
تَغيرraids عَلىupon عَقلthe reason اللَبيبthe wise one فَلاand so does not تبقيleave anything
Then bring forth from your two eyes a choice wine, and pass it round,
Give me a draft of wisdom from your eyes,
That raids the wise one's reason, leaving nothing behind.
That alters reason in the perceptive heart.
فَلاfor there is no خَيرgood فيin سُكرdrunkenness تَليهِfollows it أَفاقَةٌa return to sobriety
وَلاand there is no بَينَbetween بَعضsome الصَحوsobriety وَالمَوتand death مِنany (emphatic) فَرقdifference
For no good lies in drunkenness followed by sobriety,
No good in drunkenness when waking follows,
And between certain states of sobriety and death there is no difference.
No difference between some wakefulness and death.
وَهَلand can? يَسلَمremain unscathed الطَبعthe nature السَليمsound مِنfrom الهَوىpassion
وَلاand there is no فَضلvirtue فيin قَلبa heart خَليّfree مِنof العشقlove
And can a sound nature escape passion?
Can the healthy nature be safe from love,
And there is no virtue in a heart devoid of love.
Or a vacant heart excel in passion?
فَياso O سافِحاًshedder of دَمعيmy tears وَياand O سافِكاًspiller of دَميmy blood
وَياand O سالِباًstealer of لُبيmy reason وَياand O مالِكاًmaster of رقيmy bondage
So O you who shed my tears, O you who spill my blood,
O you who shed my tears and shed my blood,
And O thief of my reason, O master of my bondage,
Who rob my heart and own my slavery,
وَياand O مَنyou who سَقانيgave me to drink الدَمعtears رَتقاًmending; possibly intended as 'murky' مُلَوَّناًcolored

And O you who gave me murky, colored tears to drink [reading uncertain],
You, who gave me tears to drink, a mingled draft,
And I offered him pure affection, without dilution.
And I strained it pure affection without taste.

By the one who stripped dawn's night of its veil,
By the one who lifted night's veil from the dawn,
Remove the veils of frowning from your cheerful face.
Remove the clouds of frowning from your serene face.
دَجاgrew dark لَيلthe night هَميmy sorrow فَأَجلهso dispel it بِابتِسامةwith a smile
كَماjust as يَكشفdispels اللَيلthe night البَهيمpitch-black سَناthe radiance البَرقlightning
The night of my sorrow has grown dark; so dispel it with a smile,
The night of my despair grew dark, so dispel it with a smile,
As lightning's radiance dispels the pitch-black night.
As lightning dispels the darkest gloom.
وَدَعand let مَدمَعيmy tear duct يَمليdictate عَلَيكَto you شِكايَتيmy complaint
فَدَمعfor the tears of الكَئيبthe sorrowful one الصَبthe lovesick one أَجدَرmore deserving بِالنُطقof speech
And let my tears dictate my complaint to you,
Let my tears fill you with my plaint,
For the sorrowful lover's tears are more deserving of speech.
For the tear of the sad is worthier of speech.
وَأَصغِand listen إِلىto الشَكوىthe complaint وَإِنand even if كُنتَyou are قاسِياًhard-hearted

And listen to the complaint, even if you are hard-hearted,
And though you be harsh, listen to the complaint -
For listening to sorrow's outpouring is a form of kindness.
For listening to the tale is a kind of kindness.
