فَأَهلاًso welcome بِهِto it أَذعنَّwhen it appeared مِنfrom جانبa quarter أَسنىbrighter
The lightning coursed by night along the northern horizon, coming into view.
So welcome to it, when it appeared from a brighter quarter.
أَالزمshall I compel قَلبيmy heart إِنthat يُقرّit remain بِصَدرِهِin its breast

Shall I force my heart to remain within its breast,
when from that sky there appeared to me what appeared?

And it hinted at their turning away, speaking
to my heart, with no permission sought from the ear.

فَلاso neither البُعدdistance أَنساهاmade me forget them وَلاnor ذِكرَهاrecalling them أَغنىavailed
And it stirred in me memories of dwellings grown distant;
distance did not make me forget them, nor did remembering them avail.
ضَمنتI pledged لَهاto them إِنthat لاnot أَخلfall short بِذكرهاin remembering them
وَسَرَتand I journeyed وَخَلَفتand I left behind الفُؤادthe heart بِهاin them رَهناas a pledge
I pledged to them that I would not neglect their memory,
and journeyed on, leaving my heart a hostage there.

So I was only a sheath whose blade had left it,
and it was only a bird accustomed to its nest.

وَضَنواand they begrudged بِإِهداءwith offering السَلامgreetings عَلىupon المَضنىthe exhausted one
May God protect those whose remembrance exhausts the lover,
though they begrudged a greeting to the one worn thin.
فَلاso no وَصلunion إِلّاexcept بِالأَمانيthrough wishes يُرتَجىis hoped for

وَلاand no طَيفphantom إِلّاexcept بِالتَوَهُمthrough imagination يَستَدنيhe draws near
Thus union is hoped for only through wishes,
and only through imagination does he draw a phantom near.

They have indeed been cruel, though gentleness toward the enslaved is a duty,
and the highest among men has always been tender toward the lowest.

I am smitten with one whose unveiling makes the full moon jealous,
and the branches of the dunes envy his supple stature.

For he is the one upon embracing whose waist are built
the particles of wishing within hearts—not for Lubna.

And who can match him, when his face has won beauty,
just as Fath Allah has attained the highest excellence?

No envier but acknowledges his precedence,
and no little finger but folds to mark his glory.

Fath Allah has indeed returned, with victory a companion
to him, bearing aid and bounty, not boasts of favors.

He showed the garden's gratitude to rain, offering praise
to the reign of beneficence: he praised without exception.

For he who restored its sun has adorned the horizon of glory,
and without the sword's keenness, they would not adorn the scabbard.

For a time he had been absent from the forest of his might,
and he returned, with the spheres of lofty honors his dwelling.

فَإِنso if قيلَis said عيدٌa festival فَهُوَthen it لاnot غَيرَهُother than it يَعنيmeans
Happiness returned on the day of his arrival;
so if 'festival' is said, it means that day and no other.

وَماand not قَرَّعhe rebuked الجانيthe offender فَماso not قَرعstruck السنّاthe tooth
He put us to shame with kindness, as a free woman's son would,
nor did he rebuke the offender, so no tooth was struck in remorse.

وَلاand not رَوَّعfrightened الضرغامthe lion مِنone who قَعقعrattled الشنّاthe worn waterskin

For no refined man departs from sound judgment,
nor does one who rattles an old waterskin frighten the lion.

He deemed forbearance incumbent upon every noble man,
and the paths of noble deeds became clear to him, so he followed them.

Behold, thus let glory protect its people,
and let one build the like of what he has raised in glory.

For if eminence is not these very qualities,
to one who grasps their meaning, then eminence has no meaning.

Is he not worthy that refuge be sought at his door,
when a calamity baffles us, or a hard problem causes distress?

For he has given the world an immortal tale
of him forever: its narrators perish, but it does not.

And my time had put my poetic gifts to death,
and buried them out of sight in the grave of its cruelty.

Burying my mind's maiden thoughts alive had been made acceptable to me
by calamities and suitors for it, bitter in their harvest.

Even if the whole world were brought to me,
without affection, I would not lift an eyelid for it.

But my heart was summoned by the qualities of a lord,
full of love; they revived it, and it answered without stint.

إِذاwhen سَمِعَhe hears المَحزونthe sorrowful one أَبياتِهاtheir verses غِنىhe sings
So I fashioned for glory's neck a necklace of praise-poems;
when the sorrowful hear their verses, they sing.
