مَلأَfilled الغَرامpassionate love فُؤادَهُhis heart فَتَصَدَعاso it split apart
وَدَعاand he called بِواكفfor the streaming flow of دَمعِهِhis tears فَتَسَرعاso it rushed forth
Passion filled his heart, and it split apart.
And he called for his streaming tears, and they rushed forth.
إِنif كُنتُyou are (vocalized as 'I was') تَحمِلهُyou compel him عَلىto تَركgiving up البُكاweeping
ظُلماًunjustly فَلاthen do not تَمنَعْهُforbid him أَنto يَتَوَجَعاcry out in pain
If you compel him to give up weeping
Unjustly, then do not forbid him to cry out in pain.
حَقit is right لِقَلبfor a heart شَقتهُyou made it yearn أَنto يَشتَكيcomplain
وَلِمُقلةand for an eye أَسهَرتَهاyou kept it sleepless أَنto تَدمَعاweep
A heart you have made yearn has the right to complain,
And an eye you have kept sleepless has the right to weep.

كانَwas اِحتِجابكyour keeping yourself hidden سَيديmy lord ليto me موجعاًpainful
وَبَداand appeared الصُدودrejection فَكانَso it was مِنهُthan it أَوجَعاmore painful
Your keeping yourself hidden, my lord, was painful to me;
Then came rejection, and it was more painful than that.

And today, separation has become more painful than both,
And death—may I be your ransom—has become better for me.
