O you who taunt me because my watering place

Is a scant, muddy pool that satisfies the soul:

A little sustenance from life's last drops suffices,

    And much wealth enslaves.

The favors of the base, if you reflect, are death,

And paths to poverty and humiliation.

Death lies only in begging from a base man:

His face is frowning, while yours is cheerful.

How can a free man be seen abased before others,

When, as long as he lives, his sustenance is the Lord's charge?

And let not rags lower my worth in your eyes:

For behind the rags lie goodness and nobility.

Indeed, your honoring the rich for gain

And scorning the poor are baseness and folly.

The better of your two days is one when you earn praise,

Or when people seek your bounty.

And the better of the two robes is a robe of self-restraint

That you wear, not a robe of delicate silk.
