O you who reproach me because my watering place

Is a scant, turbid pool that satisfies the soul:

Bare sustenance from life's last drops suffices,

And an abundance of wealth enslaves.

Favors from the base, if you reflect, are deaths,

And roads to poverty and humiliation.

Death lies only in seeking a base man's aid:

His face is scowling, while yours is cheerful.

How can a free man see himself abased before others,

While his sustenance rests with the Lord as long as he lives?

And let not rags lower my worth in your eyes,

For beneath the rags lie goodness and nobility.

Indeed, your honoring the rich for gain

And scorning the poor are baseness and folly.

The better of your two days is a day when you earn praise,

Or when people seek your bounty.

And the better of the two robes is a robe of self-restraint

That you wear, not a delicate robe of silk.
