O you who claim the sorrow of the impassioned,
and complain of longing's melting fury,
أَلَمdid ... not تَسمَعyou hear لِسانthe tongue العودthe lute يُبديexpressing
شِكايةlament عاشقa lover دَنفlovesick مُريبtroubled by doubt
have you not heard the lute's tongue voice
the lament of a lovesick, troubled lover?
وَهَذاand this النَأيthe reed flute (contextual reading) مِنfrom طَرَبrapture وَوَجدand passionate longing
يَحنَّmoans حَنينyearning مُشتاقone who longs كَئيبsorrowful
And this reed flute, from rapture and longing,
moans with a sorrowful lover's yearning.
وَشادٍand a singer واجدfilled with longing غَردsweet-voiced يُغنيsings
سَقاكَmay He water you اللَهGod ياO عَهدdays الكَثيبthe sand dune
And a sweet-voiced singer, filled with longing, sings:
“May God water you, O days by the sand dune!”
فَأَينwhere, then تَنفسheaving الصعداءِdeep sighs شَوقاًfrom longing
وَأَينَand where بَوادرfirst gushes الدَمعtears الصَبيبstreaming
Where, then, is the heaving of sighs in longing,
and where the first rush of streaming tears?
فَإِنfor if يَبقىshows mercy عَلَيَّon me الشَوقlonging أَبقىI remain
سَقيمsick القَلبat heart نَهباًa prey لِلكروبto sorrows
For if longing spares me, I remain
sick at heart, a prey to sorrows.
أَحِنّI yearn إِلىfor الحَبيبthe beloved وَغَيرand no بَدعstrange thing
إِذاwhen اِشتاقَlongs العَليلthe ailing one إِلىfor الطَبيبthe physician
I yearn for the beloved; it is no wonder
when the ailing long for the physician.
وَإِنand if يَقضِbrings doom الفُراقseparation عَلَيَّupon me ظُلماًunjustly
فَكَمfor how many قَتَلhas slain التَفَرّقparting مِنof غَريبa stranger
And if separation unjustly ends my life,
for how many a stranger has parting slain!
