O east wind of evening, carry

from me a lovesick man's message.

And take your course from the lofty height

    to the noblest presence.

And cling, on my behalf, to the hems

    of the slender gazelle.

And begin anew to kiss the dust

before him; do not disdain it.

And describe to him some of what

I have endured, and be gentle.

    يَبدو الضَمير وَتَعرفي

    And study his face closely;

his inward thoughts will show, and you will know.

For the face and the two eyes are the sign

    of the thoughts hidden within.

And water does not hide the mote

    from the keen observer's eye.

How, then, can deceit be hidden in

the face of the lovely, most gracious one?

Then, if you see favor in him,

    speak, and do not hesitate:

Will you not take pity on a lovesick man,

    his sorrows plain, harshly treated—

a Jacob in grief, who has not found

patience for himself apart from Joseph?

Passion has worked upon his mind

    as potent wine works.

The night passes over him between

    pain and anguished longing.

A heart that seethes, and an eye

    whose lids have not blinked.

You demanded patience of him; yet one

who yearns is not bound by such demands.

My lord, you have ruined the love-enthralled man

    with destructive rejection.

Alas for him, since you have not

    shown mercy, nor shown tenderness.

    And who will keep faith

with a lover, if you do not?

If at evening the tears, for fear

of a spiteful foe, have not flowed,

yet how abundantly they have flowed, without

    pause or affectation!

Through the watcher's scheming, long have persisted

    my apprehension and my fear.

So I shall surely drown, in the flood of my tears,

    every slanderer who spreads alarm.

And love was cruel, and time dealt unjustly,

and I found no one to come to my aid.

So I shall surely voice my grievance

before the presence of one just and fair.
