Lightning coursed through the northern horizon, flashing into view.
So welcome to it, appearing from a more radiant quarter!
أَالزمmust I compel قَلبيmy heart إِنthat يُقرّrest بِصَدرِهِwithin its breast
وَقَدwhen indeed عَنَّappeared ليto me مِنfrom ذَلِكَthat الجَوّsky ماwhat عَنّاappeared
Must I compel my heart to rest within its breast,
when from that sky there has appeared to me what has appeared?

And it hinted at their turning away, speaking
to my heart, with no permission sought from the ear.

And stirred in me the memory of far-distant dwellings;
neither distance made me forget them, nor did remembrance avail.

I pledged to them not to neglect their memory,
and journeyed on, leaving my heart there as a pledge.

So I was only a scabbard whose blade had departed,
and it was only a bird grown fond of its nest.

May God guard those whose remembrance has wasted the lover,
yet they begrudged sending greetings to the wasted one.

So reunion is hoped for only through wishes,
nor is a phantom summoned except through imagination.

They have indeed been harsh, though kindness to a slave is a duty;
and the highest of men has always been tender toward the lowliest.

And I pine for one who makes the full moon jealous when he lowers his veil,
and the sandhills' boughs envy his supple stature.

It is for embracing his waist that are fashioned
the letters of longing within hearts—not for Lubna.

And who is his equal, when beauty has claimed his face,
just as Fath Allah has attained supreme excellence?

No envier fails to acknowledge his preeminence,
nor is any little finger bent except to mark his glory.

Fath Allah has indeed returned, with victory his companion,
bringing him aid and bounty, not reproachful reminders.

And he displayed the garden's gratitude to the rain, praising
the reign of beneficence; he praised without exception.

For its returning sun has adorned the horizon of glory,
and were it not for the sword's sharpness, they would not adorn its sheath.

And for a time he had been absent from the thicket of his might;
and he returned, the spheres of eminence his abode.

And prosperity returned on the day of his arrival;
if 'festival' is spoken, he alone is meant.

وَماand not قَرَّعhe rebuked الجانيthe offender فَماso not قَرعhe gnashed السنّاthe teeth
And he put us to shame with kindness—the act of a freeborn woman's son;
nor did he rebuke the offender, who thus did not gnash his teeth.

For no man of refinement abandons sound judgment,
nor can someone rattling an old waterskin frighten the lion.

He deemed forbearance a duty for every noble person,
and the paths of noble deeds became clear to him, so he followed them.

Ah, thus let glory guard its people,
and let one build the like of what he has raised in glory.

For if these qualities are not its very essence,
to one who grasps the meaning, then what does eminence mean?

Is it not fitting to seek refuge at his door,
when calamity baffles or a difficulty brings distress?

For he has given the world an immortal tale
about him: narrators perish, but it never perishes.

And my age had already killed my poetic gifts,
and hidden them, buried in the grave of its harshness.

And I had been allowed to bury my mind's virgin daughters alive
by calamities and suitors whose yield to it was bitter.

Even if the whole world were brought to me,
without affection, I would not lift an eyelid for it.

But my heart was summoned by the qualities of a lord,
a loving one; they revived it, and it answered without holding back.

So I fashioned for glory's neck a necklace of praise-poems;
when the sorrowful hear their verses, they sing.
