صَدَدتُI turned away وَأَنتَand you الروحthe soul وَالسُؤلand desire وَالأَمَلand hope
فَراحَتso it began يَدُthe hand of الأَشواقyearnings تَلعَبto play بِالأَجَلwith life's allotted span
I turned away, though you are soul, desire, and hope.
I turned away, and you are the spirit, the question, the hope
So yearning's hand began to toy with life's allotted span.
The hand of longing went to play with fate
هَجرتyou forsook بِحُكمat the bidding of التيهarrogance والدكyour father وَالمَلَلand weariness
وَأَوحَشَتand you left desolate مِنfrom رُؤياكَseeing you طَرفيmy eye وَلَمand did not تَزَلyou cease
You forsook your father at the bidding of arrogance and weariness.
I deserted by the rule of loss, fatigue, and boredom
And you left my eye bereft of seeing you, though you had always
And your vision made my eyes desolate, and it did not cease
تَنَزههُyou delight it فيin وَردthe roses of وَجنَتِكَyour cheek الغَضfresh
Delighted it amid the fresh roses of your cheek.
Roaming in your orchard of roses and gardens ever green
I deserted a lover whose loyalty did not fail
هَجَرتyou deserted مُحبّاًa lover لَمdid not يَحدswerve عَنfrom وَفائِهِhis faithfulness
وَلَمand did not يَبقَleave remaining مِنهُof him السُقمsickness غَيرother than ذمائِهِhis last remnant of life
You deserted a lover who never swerved from his faithfulness.
And nothing of him remained except his ailments and blood
And sickness left him only his last remnant of life.
And the tearful eyes overflowed with his blood
وَقَرحand wounded مِنهُof him الطَرفthe eye فَيضthe flood of دِمائِهِhis blood
فَإِنso if كُنتَyou are تَخشىyou fear مِنof لِسانthe tongue of بُكائِهِhis weeping
And the flood of his blood wounded his eye.
So if you fear the tongue of his crying
So if you fear the tongue of his weeping,
The view is none but to wink with closed eyes
فَماthen there is no الرَأيcourse of action إِلّاexcept أَنto تَبَرطلyou offer a bribe بِالغَمضwith sleep
Then the only course is to bribe it with sleep.
