I learned for certain, after they had departed,

that reunion is life and separation death.

I said, when they whispered of parting before dawn,

while my tears poured like dark clouds:

Does a lover have any heart but the one burned

by rejection’s fire, while separation’s ‘dinar’ blazes [wording unclear]?

I wandered in longing before the caravan as they traveled by night,

while the travelers were bewildered by the deep darkness.

    وَإِن خبت بِدُموعي مرة نَزَلوا

    Whenever the fire within my ribs lit their way, they walked;

and if my tears quenched it for a moment, they halted.

O singer, sing me what stirred my longing when he chanted

to a caravan of pale camels, while the sky’s caravan journeyed on.

The caravan has increased my grief; sing me a ramal tune,

perhaps ramal will make me oblivious to my pain.

And soothe the heart, for today it is departing,

with poetry by those slain through love’s crimes.

And recite—perhaps with it you may revive my last breath—

‘We greet you; be safe, O ruined dwelling!’

How wonderful that bygone life, when union was unbroken,

on the dune—may the downpouring cloud water it!

And a young gazelle, heedless of my dying for him,

while my absorption in him makes me forget my life and soul.

The rose longs to kiss his cheek,

but that is something the rose cannot attain.

Kohl has mingled with magic in his eyelids,

and a sway accompanies the suppleness of his limbs.

Fate was unjust in parting us—and when

has Time brought joy with anything that does not pass away?
