وَلَكِنَهُbut it لاnot يَقبَلaccepts الشَرحexplanation وَالعَرضاand exposition
I deem what his languid eyelids convey to be magic,
yet it admits neither explanation nor exposition.

إِلىto ماwhat تَراهُyou see it مِنof نُحوليmy wasting بِهِbecause of him أَفضىhas led
Symbols and secrets: the struggle to unravel them
has led to the wasting you see in me because of him.

مِنthan السَيفthe sword أَمضىkeener حينَwhen يَغمداit is sheathed وَيَنضىand it is drawn
Languor draws an Indian-steel sword against my heart,
keener than a sword, whether sheathed or drawn.
حَمىguarded لَحظَهُhis glance السَفاحmurderous تُفاحthe apples of خَدَهُhis cheek
فَلاso no شَمَّsniffing مِنهُof it يُستفادcan be enjoyed وَلاnor عَضّاbiting
His murderous glance has guarded the apples of his cheek,
so neither a sniff nor a bite of them can be had.
وَرَقَand grew slender عَنbeyond الإِدراكperception وَالوَهمand imagination خَصرَهُhis waist
فَلاso not هصرهbending it يُرجىis hoped for وَلاnor ضَمَهُembracing it يَقضىis attained
And his waist has grown too slender for perception or imagination,
so bending it is beyond hope, and embracing it beyond reach.
وَيُؤلِمُنيand pains me أَنthat لاnot يَزالceases فَمthe mouth of الصِباthe east wind

And it pains me that the east wind's mouth still
secretly kisses the tender rose of his cheek.
أَلاah بِأَبيwith my father as ransom مِنthe one who كُلَماwhenever عَرضتpresented themselves لَهُto him
دُموعيmy tears بِشَكوىwith a complaint of الشَوقlonging أَعرضturned away أَوor أَغضىlowered his eyes
Ah, may my father be ransom for him who, whenever shown
my tears complaining of longing, turns away or lowers his eyes.
رَضيتI accepted تَلافيmy ruin فيin هَواهُlove for him صَبابَةًout of yearning
وَياand oh لَيتَهُif only he عَنيwith me بِسَفكby spilling دَميmy blood يَرضىwould be pleased
I accepted my ruin in loving him, out of yearning;
and oh, if only he would be pleased with me by spilling my blood!
فَماfor nothing فيin حَياتيmy life لَوif يَجودhe is generous بِهاwith it سِوىexcept
عَذابtorment أَراهُI deem it فيin مَحبَتِهِlove for him فَرضاan obligation
For my life, if he grants it to me, holds nothing but
torment, which I deem a duty in my love for him.
وَريحand a breeze أَتَتcame تَسريtravels by night بِريّاهُwith his fragrance مُوهِناًlate at night
فَفضتso it broke open خِتامthe seal of الدَمعtears مِنfrom مُقلَتيmy eye فَضّاa breaking open
And a breeze came, bearing his fragrance late at night,
so it broke the seal of tears in my eye wide open.
وَصادحةand a singing bird تَشكوlaments الفُراقseparation مجانةfor sport
وَتَهجَعand sleeps أَحياناًsometimes وَلَمand not أَذُقI tasted الغَمضاsleep
And a singing bird laments parting for sport,
and sleeps at times, while I have tasted no sleep.
فَقَدfor indeed لاحَshone مِنfrom ثَغرthe mouth of الصَباحdawn اِبتِسامةa smile
أَحَسَbecame aware بِهاof it جِفنُthe eyelid of الغَمامةthe cloud فَارفضّاso it streamed with tears
For a smile shone from the mouth of dawn,
the cloud's eyelid sensed it and burst into tears.
فَأَودَعَنيso it lodged in me تَغريدُهاher birdsong الحُزنgrief وَالأَسىand sorrow
وَطارَand flew off بِلبيwith my mind حَيثwhere لَمnot أَستَطعI could نَهضاrising
So her song lodged grief and sorrow within me,
and flew off with my mind to where I could not rise.
وَخُيِلَand was imagined ليto me وَهميmy fancy طُروقa night visit خَيالِهِhis phantom
فَالصقتso I pressed خَديmy cheek بِالطَريقagainst the road لَهُfor him أَرضاas ground
And my fancy conjured for me his phantom's visit by night,
so I pressed my cheek to the road as ground for him.
فَإِنfor if كانَwas لاnot يَرضىhe accepts مَجرّاًa place to trail لِذَيلِهِfor his hem
بِحُكمby the law of الهَوىlove العُذريchaste إِلّاexcept دَماًblood مَحضاpure
For if he will accept no place to trail his hem,
by the law of chaste love, except pure blood,
فَقَدthen indeed نَفَضَshook out الدَمعُthe tears المورَّدrose-tinted صَبغهُits dye
عَلىupon أَرضthe ground of خَديmy cheek مثلlike ماwhat يَشتَهيhe desires نَفضاa shaking-out
then rose-tinted tears have shaken out their dye
upon the ground of my cheek, just as he desires.
وَحيَرَنيand bewildered me دَهرtime يَجورacts unjustly مَعwith الهَوىlove
فَلَمso not أَستَطعI could إِبرامsettling أَمرa matter وَلاnor نَقضاundoing
And time, unjust in league with love, has bewildered me,
so I could neither settle a matter nor undo it.
سَأَندُبI shall lament عَصرthe time of الوَصلunion ماas long as ذَرَrises شارِقٌa rising sun
فَماfor not كانَit was إِلّاexcept كَوكَباًa star لاحَshone وَإِنقَضّاand fell
I shall mourn the time of union as long as the sun rises;
for it was only a star that shone and fell.
