The meadow of wishes turned green, it is thrilled
as though al-Khidr had trailed his robe among them.
As if the green dragon sailed through it

When water runs from its flanks as sweat,
When sweat flows from their flanks
it almost strikes sparks from its eyes.
Sparks nearly fly from their eyelids

He has readied for war a heart in which no fear dwells,
He prepared a heart that knows no fear for war
and stretched toward glory an arm that never falls short.
And extended ambition limitless as the sky for glory

The clash of spears and the roar of lions delight him
Clashing lances and roaring lion delight him
amid great battles—not the cup or the plucked string.
In battle – no cup or lute can compare

If you saw the zebras soaring one day
as balls tumble across their playing field.
Like balls rebounding in their polo field

Beneath him is lightning, except that it is a horse;
The lightning underneath them – but they were horses
in its saddle is a lion, except that he is human.
The lion in the saddle – but he was human

He never draws the sword in an undertaking he pursues
He would not brandish the sword in speeches appealing for it
except for a battle in which the chronicles take pride.
Save for a battle where history would marvel at his feats

A sword that smiled when they wept in panic,
A smiling sword when they wept in despair
as though their blood upon its cheek were a blush of modesty.
As if their blood scurried on its blade

Were aggression not in human nature, there would not have been forged
If not for the innate disposition to injustice
blue spearheads and keen Indian blades.
Scabbards would not be blue or made of Indian steel

Read the verse 'We sent down iron,' and you will find
So the verse revealed about iron explains the rule:
within it a judgment concerning them, worthy of heed.
Its folds contain wisdom availing and fair

How often the ignorant have wronged him, yet he dealt with them
How many fools did he treat gently? He repaid
with forbearance; through forbearance victory is preserved.
Their ignorance with forbearance – and the forbearing prevail

A sea of forbearance, from knowledge that guides him;
A sea of calmness guided by knowledge
the sea rises, yet muddiness is not its nature.
And the sea rises though of its nature is no bitterness

My fetters forged of praise not steel awaited him
even if gifts were to be awaited afterward.
Though fetters await beyond praise, one cannot equal

the earth of abasement a shadow whose outline is magic.
The land of disgrace shadows that his line adorned

For gratitude, I wrought a necklace that almost withered
virgin gems scant thought and changing fortune did not bury alive.
For paucity of ideas, not sincerity’s lack

I do not praise without witnessing
experience establishes what mere report cannot establish.
And experience proves what experience cannot prove

Pride lies not in garments woven from gold;
No glory in robes of woven gold
the clothing of the lofty is what thoughts weave.
The raiment of the noble is what thought weaves
