I keep my nature too pure to burden it with filth,
and my soul was not made a mount for hidden malice.
يَجشمنيmakes me suffer hardship خَوفfear الهَوانof humiliation إِذاwhen بَداit appears
كَأَنيَas though I مِنهاbecause of it بَينَbetween أَشداقthe jaws رئبالof a lion
Fear of humiliation, whenever it appears, makes me suffer
as though it had put me between a lion's jaws.
وَدوّيَّةand a trackless wilderness تَشكوlament الرِياحthe winds كِلالهاtheir weariness
إِذاwhen سَلَكتَهاyou traverse it وَالقَطاand sandgrouse خَوفfear أَضلالof losing the way
And a wilderness whose weariness even the winds lament,
when you cross it, where sandgrouse fear losing their way—

when its noonday conflagration rises,
the breezes shelter in the fringes of wild lote trees—

hotter in its breeze than lands that turned hostile
to a freeborn man who saw base men ruling there,

وَأَفسحand wider مِنthan آمالthe hopes أَخرقof a fool بِطالidle
more lacking in outlets than a miser's palm,
yet wider than an idle fool's hopes,
أَحَبdearer إِلىto قَلبيmy heart مِنthan الخُلدParadise مَوطِناًas a homeland
إِذاif حاوَلواthey sought فيin الخُلدParadise ذلةthe humiliation أَمثاليof men like me
is dearer to my heart as a homeland than Paradise,
if there they sought to humble men like me.
