Alas for my heart at his murderous gaze!

Who will protect me from his blood-shedding sword?

Who will shelter me from the one with the bewitching gaze, who has caught

the hearts of ascetics and devotees?

He has been kept without a peer in beauty, just as

my heart in love has been kept from divided devotion.

How many a captive he holds, with tears flowing free,

with no hope of release from his captivity.

And wounds bled at a flicker of lightning

that unsheathed a keen sword against the darkness.

And doves reveal varied strains of song,

rooted in lament, among the branches of the arak.

Whenever they cooed, an ember of longing blazed within me,

which the tears of my weeping eye cannot quench.

So the night passed between a weeper’s groan

from his agonies and a sufferer’s plaintive cry.

You have imitated the clouds in the flood from your eyelids,

O my eyes—rather, the clouds have imitated you.

And by you, O soul, you have scattered into fragments

in loving him, away from me—how wretched you are!

And I wish I had a thousand souls,

each soul shielding him from a thousand deaths.
