A longing creeps within the heart,
He finds solace in seclusion,
Whose heat makes even flame afraid.
Shielded from the scorching blaze.

And a burning thirst that has no cure,
An ailment with no remedy,
And an illness with no physician.
A sickness lacking any sage.

Longing and separation have left nothing
Naught remains of my longing, save
of me but tears pouring down.
A tear aiming for the eye.

The ailing find comfort thereby!

Age withered our life, till it
at al-Liwa by a cloud pouring rain.
Was struck by disasters' flood.

Will our lush life return?
Our blessed life may yet return Should the rain make the land bud.
For barren ground sometimes grows fertile.
The meadows of youth still so green And where passion once burned, now frigid.

In days when youth's garden was tender,
When his lips intoxicate with wine,
And when love's mantle was new.
Aged wine, like syrup, so lympid.

And mixes the wine with his saliva.

The angry one's glance terrifies me,
Like a ruthless sword so lucid.
As though it were a fearsome sword.

When we are alone, without a watcher,
He won't acknowledge my bid.
I lament my love for him, but he gives no answer.

فَأَنتَ وافي الهَوى تسيب
Rise, let us lament our longing, O my night companion;
For you understand love forbid.
For you, faithful in love, wander freely.

They departed while time's face was smiling,
Its face now wrinkled and rigid.
So a frown came over its face.

Nor intimate nor beloved.
Nor intimate companion, nor beloved.

A body that's all wounds livid.
In a body that is all scars.

Hopes bring part of it before me,
While longing itself lies rigid.
And longing carries it away from me.

The sorrowing, love-worn one has not forgotten.
The melancholic cannot rid.

I draw strangers near me, but lo,
And closeness to one who arouses doubt is surely a sin.
Dubious intimacy's forbidden!

Nothing escapes the lover's notice,
No slight escapes a lover's heart,
And lovers' surmises hit the mark.
And the heartsick never mis-read.

Their hearts are all eyes;
And all their bodies are hearts.
Their bodies entirely hearts spread.

He who loves with honor pure
Hidden things almost reveal themselves to him.
Can almost see what is hidden.

A thing may be granted to one who has not toiled,
One gains things unhoped sometimes,
While the discerning seeker is denied.
While the hopeful is forbidden.

No eloquent man has tasted the world's unclouded joy,
Whoever the world's sweetness never tasted
And sometimes a beloved tires of him.
May one day be tired by his beloved.

No free man ever undertakes a task
No ordeal is without its relief -
Without calamities barring his way.
This is a truth that can't be undid.

Do not seek a reason for a glance;
Seek no sense in a glance,
The matter is obscure even to the discerning.
For the look itself explains what is hid.

His suspicious glance betrays it.
His ambiguous glance shows forbid.

He woos my love with presents, but
While his pride stands guard in the way.
Greed is the guardian that lies amid.

Far be it that the contented man ever be abased!
The free shall never bow in baseness!
The star is not close to one who would touch it.
No star dust touches one earth-rid.

A free man finds no sweetness in life
The freeman tastes not life's joy
When a wolf enslaves the lion.
When his front tooth extraction he did.

A free man may be won with a smile,
The freeman may own a smile,
But no scowling man sees his cheerful face.
Yet his face shows no dimples amid.

And wealth, unless you give it away, is a mirage;
Wealth is naught, if not granted by God -
And sustenance then serves in its stead.
So food takes its place, when wealth is forbid.

Worn thin by travel and the open plains,
The journey and plain it crossed arid.

From night travel; weariness has touched them,
A shot from the bowstring so rapid.

Until they reached home all dusty,
And their sins fell away from them:
Sin itself now from them slid.

Truly, the heights of honor have become deserted,
Indeed the exalted now lie waste -
So the noble man is a stranger among mankind.
The freeman's a stranger amid men forbid!
