Am I to bear the beloved's averted gaze for months,

Shall I bear the beloved's displeasure for months?

When a moment of the beloved's averted gaze is years?

A moment of the beloved's displeasure is years

وما لحظة الإغضاء إلا رزّية

وما لحظة الإغضاء إلا رزّية

وحكم   بإعدام  قضته  عيون

وحكم بإعدام قضته عيون

And a moment of that averted gaze is nothing but a calamity,

That moment of displeasure is but misery

And a death sentence decreed by eyes.

And a sentence of death passed by his eyes

فيا  لقضاء  جائر خطه الجفا

فيا لقضاء جائر خطه الجفا

ففيه   مُنى  محكومةٌ  ومنون

ففيه مُنى محكومةٌ ومنون

O, what an unjust judgment, inscribed by coldness!

Oh what an unjust sentence its line is estrangement

For in it are condemned hopes, and death.

In it there is a condemned wish, and one who dies

لقد  خُطّ إعدامي بصفحة خده

لقد خُطّ إعدامي بصفحة خده

فنُفذ  حكمي  والسطور جفون

فنُفذ حكمي والسطور جفون

Indeed, my execution was inscribed on the page of his cheek;

My death sentence was written on his cheek's page

So my sentence was carried out, and the lines were eyelids.
