They imprisoned me in a room that had been stripped bare,

As though I had been imprisoned amid the wastelands.

Making its dirt a bed for myself,

And a covering of dust to wrap me.

Then they added a covering over the dust,

    Of tattered fabric falling apart.

So when I sleep, it clothes my face

In strange wool and animal hair.

So in the morning you see me chewing hair

And dirt that passed down my unwilling throat.

So it is as though I had eaten half my bed,

    And as though I had drunk half my blanket;

And as though, with wool crowning my face, I were

A kind of beast that never crossed anyone's mind.
