They blame me for buying date palms—
They blame me for buying date palms—
my own people: every one of them rebukes me.
my people—and every one of them reproaches me.

And the family of the man who sold them reproach him,
And the family of the man who sold them rebuke him,
just as the first seller was reproached.
just as the first seller was reproached.

They are shade in the heat—shade in the truest sense—
They are shade in the heat—true, deep shade—
and the fairest, loveliest sight.
and the finest, most beautiful sight.

Their lower parts feast deep in the earth,
Their lower parts sup on the earth,
while their milk-like yield comes from above.
and their milk comes from on high.

At dawn they are still where the herdsmen spent the night,
And at dawn they stand where the herdsmen spend the night,
even if the men leave them untended, even if they neglect them.
even if they neglect them, even if they leave them untended.

Nor do the herdsmen rise at dawn to seek them,
Nor do they rise to search for them
through the open country, every one of them asking after them.
across the open country, every one of them asking.

My mature palm is useful to your paternal uncle,
So an 'uncle' is useful to your uncle,
and my young palm is a hope for your child.
and a 'child' holds promise for your child.
