I was told that you came traveling

by night between my home and al-Qibābah.

For indeed I found beside al-Ḍuḥyān

    young men who inspire dread:

    young warriors clad in iron,

and girded for battle, like lions of a thicket.

They turned you away from the road,

so you spent the night riding across every lava field.

O ʿUṣaym, do not lose heart, for

    war is no jest.

For I am the one who attacked you at dawn

with the men when they entered al-Raḥābah.

And I killed Kaʿb before that,

and struck his crown with the sword.

I swore I would not give you, for

Kaʿb and his killing, a single unripe date.
