أَلاّAh! إِنَّindeed عَينيmy eye بِالبُكاءِwith weeping تُهلِّلُstreams with tears
جُزوعَdistraught صَبورٍsteadfast كُلُّall ذَلِكَthat تَفعَلُit does
Ah, my eye streams with tears,
Alas! My eyes with weeping are made bright,
Distraught, steadfast—it does both.
And sorrow patiently enduring takes all light;
فَإِنfor if تَعتَرينيovertakes me بِالنَهارِby day كَآبَةٌsorrow
فَلَيليthen my night إِذاwhen أَمسىevening comes أَمَرُّmore bitter وَأَطوَلُand longer
For if sorrow overtakes me by day,
Whenas the day afflicts me with its sadness,
Then my night, when evening falls, is more bitter and longer.
The night when evening comes is even more sad.

For no pure-gold coin among the dinars of Aylah,
No shining coins of Ayliidh's gold are mine,
Bright and gleaming in the engravers’ hands,
That in the wasteful's hands should glittering shine;
بِأَحسَنَany fairer مِنهُthan him يَومَon the day أُصبِحُI enter the morning غادِياًsetting out early

Is fairer than he on the day I set out at dawn,
Finer than these the day I went my way,
And untimely death envied me for having him.
When the swift dove unto me breathed delight.
