Were I alone mad with love for him,

I would excuse those who blame me for my passion.

But since all creation loves him,

why, then, should I hide what I feel for him?

The breeze was smitten with his gentleness, and so

languor appeared in the east wind of Najd.

And the eyes of flowers gaze toward him,

    with eyes filled with sleeplessness.

By your father, but for the suppleness of his figure,

I would not long for the suppleness of the laurel's boughs.

O my slayer, my breast forever

yearns for him, near and far.

Yours is the right to wrong me, O my hope,

and mine the duty to be content with what you reveal.

And if love for you should spill my blood, then oh,

what honor, what fortune, what happiness are mine!

I concealed my love for you, jealously, when you hid,

as though we had made a pact.

You have an eye that, to its brow, forever

complains of the injustice of the morrow's agent.

Your cheek, when I protested, saw fit

to disburse flowing tears as my payment in cash.
