بُرُوقَO lightnings الحِمَىthe sanctuary هَلْwill …? دَمْعُكُنَّyour tears يَجُودُflow freely
وَهَلْand has …? عَطِشَتْgrown thirsty بَعْدَafter الغَرِيقِthe drowned one زَرُودُZarud
O lightnings of the sanctuary, will your tears flow freely?
The lights of fever, do your tears still flow
And has Zarud grown thirsty after the drowned one?
And does the throat still thirst after being quenched?
مَنَازِلُdwellings مِنْof سُعْدَىSu'da سْعِيدٌfortunate نَزِيُلهَاtheir guest
كَأَنَّas though بِهَاتَيكَin those البِيُوتِhouses عُقُودُnecklaces
Dwellings of Su'da—fortunate is their guest—
The dwellings of Sa'da are blessed for their dweller
as though those houses held necklaces.
As if those houses are contracted
إِذَاwhen ابْتَسَمَتْshe smiled لَيْلاًat night بَكَىwept مُسْتَهَامُهَاher love-maddened lover
فَمِنْهَاso from her وَمِنْهُand from him بَارِقٌlightning وَرُعُودُand thunderclaps
When she smiled at night, her love-maddened lover wept;
When she smiles at night, her admirer weeps
so from her came lightning, and from him thunder.
So from her and him, there is lightning and thunder
وَفِيand in الحَيِّthe encampment وَسْنَانُdrowsy اللَّوَاحِظِglances سَالِبٌa plunderer
وَآخرُand another مَسْلُوبُrobbed of الفُؤَادِthe heart فَقِيدُlost
And in the camp is a drowsy-eyed plunderer,
And in the quarter, the charmer Al-Wa’ith still captivates
and another, robbed of his heart, is lost.
While the other is a captive, broken-hearted and bound
وَظَبْيand a gazelle فَلاَةٍof the wilderness آنسٍtame فَكَأَنَّهُso he seems

And a tame gazelle of the wilderness—yet he seems
A gazelle of the wilderness, intimate and friendly
to his beholder, when he turns, to be skittish.
When it glances back, to its viewer, shy and timid
تَرَقْرَقَshimmered مَاءُthe water الحُسْنِof beauty فِيin وَجَنَاتِهِhis cheeks
وَلَيْسَand there is no لِظَمْآنٍfor a thirsty one إليْهِto it وُرُودُapproach to drink
The water of beauty shimmered in his cheeks,
The water of beauty ripples in its cheeks
yet no thirsty one can approach it to drink.
But no thirsty soul can reach it
أَلاَAh! هَلْis there …? إِلىto عَصْرِthe time of الصِّبَاyouth ليَfor me عَوْدَةٌa return

Ah, is there a return for me to the days of youth?
Oh, can I return to the era of youth?
But that is far beyond reach; what has passed does not return.
Alas! What is gone will not return
كَأَنَّas though لَيَالِيهِits nights لِمُبْدِعِfor the creator of حُسْنِهَاtheir beauty

As though its nights, for the creator of their beauty,
As if for its nights, its handsome creator
were tresses, and the crimson of sunset were cheeks.
Had consciousness, and cheeks red like the sand grouse
