    O breeze of the bān trees, blow

    Over the ruins of the lover’s dwelling.

    And what harm would it do you if

    You kindled the fires of my heart?

    فطِيبُهَا عَنْهَا يُبْنِي

    If you conceal Layla’s secret,

    Then her fragrance tells of her [reading uncertain];

    Or if not, why does her fragrance

    Capture minds and stir desire?

    فَهِمْتَهُ دُونَ صَحْبِي

    She offered me a message;

    You understood it, unlike my companions.

    Then at once it became lawful to despoil me,

    And plunder me, alone among them all.

    O seeker of Layla’s encampment—[stray letter]

    My essence is her sanctuary, so circle round me.

    And call out in my name: you will find her

    Answering upon my tongue.
