دُمُوعِيmy tears أَبَتْrefused إِلاَّexcept انْسِكَاباًpouring forth لَعَلَّهَاperhaps they
بِمَكْنُونِto the secret of حُبِّيmy love عِنْدَbefore حِبِّيَmy beloved تَشْهَدُbear witness
My tears insist on pouring forth; perhaps they
will testify before my beloved to my hidden love.
دَنَوْتُI drew near فَأَقْصَانِيso he drove me away فَعْدْتُthen I returned فَرَدَّنِيso he turned me back
فَلاَso neither هُوَhe يُدْنِينِيdraws me near وَلاَnor أَنَاI أَبْعُدُmove away
I drew near; he drove me away. I returned; he turned me back.
So he does not draw me near, nor do I move away.
دُهِيتُI was afflicted بِفُقْدانٍwith the loss لِمَنْof one whom قَدْalready وَجَدْتُهُI found him
فَلاَso no مَدْمَعٌtearful eye يَرْقَاceases weeping وَلاَnor وَجْدُlonging يُحْمَدُis praised
I was stricken with the loss of one whom I had found;
so no eye ceases weeping, nor is longing praiseworthy.
دَبِيبُthe creeping of الهَوىَlove بَيْنَbetween الضُّلُوعِthe ribs مُؤَجَّجٌset ablaze
لَهِيبُthe flame of اشْتيِاقيmy longing فِيهwithin it لِلقْلَبِfor the heart مُورِدُleading to ruin
The creeping of love between the ribs is set ablaze;
the flame of my longing within it leads the heart to ruin.
دَعَانِيleave me be, you two فَمَنْfor whoever ذَاقَhas tasted الهَوىَlove ثُمَّthen لَمْdid not يَنَلْattain
وِصَالَunion with حَبِيبٍa beloved كَيْفَhow لاَnot يَتَنَهَّدُhe sighs
Leave me be, you two, for whoever has tasted love, then failed to attain
union with a beloved—how could he not sigh?
دَعَاوىَclaims of الأَسَىsorrow عِنْديthat I hold عَلَيْكَagainst you صَحِيحَةٌvalid
فَقَلْبِيَfor my heart خَفَّاقٌthrobbing وَجَفْنِيand my eyelid مُسَهَّدُkept sleepless
My claims of sorrow against you are well-founded:
for my heart throbs and my eyelid is sleepless.
دَمِيmy blood بِكَbecause of you مَسْفُوكٌshed وَدَمْعِيand my tears مُسَفَّحٌpoured forth
فَيَصْلُحُso becomes sound قَلْبِيmy heart فِيكَin you مِنْfrom حَيْثُwhere يَفْسَدُit falls into ruin
My blood is shed because of you, and my tears are poured forth;
so in you my heart is mended in the very way it is ruined.
دَفَائِنُburied treasures of حُبٍّlove فِيin لُحُودِthe tombs of جَوَانِحِribs
لَهَاfor them بِكَthrough you حَشْرٌa resurrection كُلَّevery يَوْمٍday وَمَوْعِدُand an appointed meeting
Buried treasures of love lie in the tombs of the ribs;
through you, they have a resurrection and an appointed meeting each day.
دُجَايَmy darkness إِذَاwhen وَاصَلْتَyou grant union يَوْمٌa day مُؤَبَّدٌeverlasting
وَيَوْمِيand my day إِذَاwhen أَبْعِدْتُI am banished لَيْلُa night مُسَرْمَدُmade endless
My darkness, when you grant union, is an everlasting day;
and my day, when I am banished, is an endless night.
دُنُوُّكَyour nearness أَقْصَىthe utmost of مَاwhat أُحِبُّI love وَأَشْتَهِيand I desire
فَإِنْso if نِلْتُهُI attain it فَهْوَthen it is النَّعيِمُbliss المُخَلَّدُeverlasting
Your nearness is what I love and desire most;
and if I attain it, it is everlasting bliss.
