I wonder, O neighbors of the ravine,

will my heart rejoice in union with you,

and will a home bring us together

    with honor and warm welcome?

Dear folk of the encampment—oh, my thirst

    for that sweet watering place!

And oh, my longing for a life

that passed beneath its spacious shade,

    and days without reproach,

    spent in love of ʿUtb!

    تَهِيجُ لَوَاعِجُ الصَّبَ

    Whenever its nights are recalled,

    the lover's burning pangs flare up;

and its lover's heart is revived

by mention of its moist breeze.

And a veiled one, whose smile

rends the darkness of the veils—

his sanctuary is guarded by reverence,

not by brown spears and keen swords.

One of the moons—his two abodes

are in my eye and in my heart.

And a gazelle of the sand dune—with secrets

he is at ease, not with the herd.
