عَجَباًHow wondrous! لِمَنْهَلِat the spring of خَدِّهِhis cheek منْas a مَوْرِدِwatering place
وَعيُوُنُهُand its springs هِيَthey مِنْfrom عُيُونِthe eyes of الوُرَّدِthose coming to drink
How wondrous is his cheek's spring as a watering place!
How amazing is the spring of his cheek from the water source,
And its springs flow from the eyes of those who come to drink.
And his eyes are from the eyes of roses.
تَتَزَاحَمُjostle الأَلْحَاظُthe glances وَهْيَwhile they are بِدَمْعِهَاwith their tears
رَيَّاwell-watered وتَصْدُرُand depart عَنْهُfrom it أَكْثَرُهَاmost of them صَدِيthirsty
Glances jostle, their own tears leaving them
The glances are crowded, and with their tears,
well-watered; yet most depart from it parched.
They flow, and most of them make noise.
يَاO سَاكِناًyou who dwell in حَبَّthe cores of القُلُوبِhearts خَوَافِقَاًthrobbing
إِنَّindeed السُّكُونَstillness بِخَافِقٍin a throbbing heart لَمْnever يُعْهَدِbeen known
O you who dwell in the very cores of throbbing hearts,
O you who settled in the hearts as a beloved, in harmony,
indeed, stillness in a throbbing heart has never been known.
Quietness with a heart in love is unaccustomed.
مَاwhat بَالُis the matter with قَلْبٍa heart أَنْتَyou فِيهِin it ونَارُهُand its fire
فِيin مَاءِthe water of حُسْنِكَyour beauty دَائِماًforever لَمْnot تُخْمَدِbe extinguished
What ails a heart in which you dwell, while its fire
What is with a heart in which you are, and its fire,
in the water of your beauty remains forever unquenched?
In the water of your beauty, was never extinguished?
وَلقَدْand indeed سَلَلْتَyou have drawn فَلاَso do not تَكُنْbe مُتَمَسِّكاًholding back
سَيْفاًa sword مِنَfrom الأَجْفَانِthe eyelids لَيْسَis not بِمُغْمَدِsheathed
And indeed you have drawn—so do not hold back—
You slipped in, so do not hold on tightly,
from your eyelids a sword that is not sheathed.
A sword from the eyelids, unsheathed.
وَقَتلْتَand you have slain سُلْوَانِيmy solace وَصَبْرِيَand my patience والكَرَىَand sleep
وبِمُقْلَتِيand in my eye دَمُهَاtheir blood جَرَىflowed لَمْnot تَجْحَدِyou deny
And you have slain my solace, my patience, and sleep;
And you killed my patience, composure, and sorrow,
and their blood flowed in my eye—you did not deny it.
With my eyelash, its blood flowed, you did not deny.
إِنْif شَاهَدَتْbeheld عَطْفَيْكَyour two flanks أَغْصَانُthe boughs of النَّقَاthe sand dunes
وَسَهَتْand grew heedless فَكَيْفَthen how لِسَهْوِهَاfor their lapse لَمْnot تَسْجُدِthey prostrate
If the boughs upon the dunes beheld your flanks,
If the branches of coyness saw your charm,
and grew heedless, how is it they did not prostrate for their lapse?
They would slip, so how could they not bow to slipping?
ومُحَجَّبٍand a veiled one أَهْدَىoffered إِلىَّto me خَيَالَهُhis image
فِكْرِيmy thought لِعَجْزِbecause of the inability of النَّاظِرِthe gazing eye المُتَسَهِّدِthe sleepless
And a veiled one's image was offered me
A veiled one sent the imagination of him to me,
by my thought, since my sleepless eye was powerless.
My mind, due to the inability of the one dozing.
فَظَفِرْتُso I attained بِالدَّانِيthe near one القَريبِthe close وَإِنْand even if نَأَىhe was far away
وَالنَّازِحِand the far-off one النَّائِيthe distant وَإِنْand even if لَمْnot يَبْعُدِhe was far away
So I attained the near, the close, though he was far away,
So I attained the near, intimate one, even if he went far away,
and the far-off, the distant, though he was not far away.
And the far, distant one, even if he did not go far.
