    For you, my eye is a sanctuary, and my heart a home.

    Within them both I have hidden your ancient covenant.

    And I have not sobered from intoxication—never!

    How can I sober, when I grew drunk on your dusky lips?

    وَبِسَاطَ القَبُولِ عَنْهُمْ طَوَيْتُ

    The reproachers spread out their blame of me on your account;

    And I folded away from them the carpet of acceptance.

    How can the tormented lover intend to forget you,

    O heart’s desire, when he is dead in the encampment?

    وَلِقَلْبِي الهَنَا فَإنِّي اهْتَدَيْتُ

    To deny myself beauty like yours is to go astray;

    And joy is my heart’s, for I have found the way.

    Around you, O Kaaba of love, my heart has circled,

    And the lightning-flash of Safa appeared, so I hastened.
