عَلَىfor حُبِّكُمْlove of you أَنْفَقْتُI spent حَاصِلَthe whole store of أَدْمُعِيmy tears
وَغَيْرَand other than وَلاَكُمْdevotion to you عَبْدُكُمْyour servant مَاnot تَكَسْباhas earned
For love of you, I have spent the whole store of my tears;
I spent the harvest of my tears for your love,
and your servant has earned nothing but devotion to you.
And for none but you, your slave earns no profit.
وحَاشَكُمُand far be it from you أَنْto تُبْعِدُواyou banish عَنْfrom جَنَابِكُمْyour presence
حَلِيفَa sworn companion of هَوىًpassion بالرُّوحِwith his soul فِيْكُمْfor you تَقَرَّباhe sought nearness
Far be it from you to banish from your presence
I implore you not to distance from your side,
a sworn companion of passion who drew near to you with his soul,
A confidant of passion who came close in spirit to you.
وَأَنْand to تَهْجُرواyou forsake مَنْone whom وَاصَلَkept company with السُّهْدُsleeplessness جَفْنَهُhis eyelid
وَهَذْبَand he refined فِيْكُمْfor you عِشْقَهُhis passion فَتَهَذَّباand so he became refined
or forsake one whose eyelid sleeplessness has befriended,
And not to abandon one whose wakefulness has parched his eyelids,
who refined his passion for you and was himself refined.
And who refined his love until polished in you.
وَأَحْسنْتُمُand you perfected تَأْدِيبَهُhis schooling بِصُدُودِكُمْby your turning away
فَلاَso do not تَهْجُروهُforsake him بَعْدَafter مَاthat قَدْalready تَأَدَّباhe learned proper conduct
And you have schooled him well by turning away;
You have disciplined him well with your aloofness,
so do not forsake him now that he has learned proper conduct.
So do not now abandon him after he has learnt his lesson.
وَلِيand I have مُهْجَةٌa heart دِينُthe faith of الصَّبَابَةِardent longing دَيْنُهَاits debt
فَكَيْفَso how تَرىcould it see عَنْكُمْaway from you مَدَىthroughout الدَّهِرْall time مَذْهَباa way to go
And I have a heart whose bounden duty is the faith of longing;
My passion is the religion of youth - it is its faith,
how, then, could it ever find a path away from you?
How then can you see me away from you for eternity?
وَلِيand I have فِيin ظِلاَلِthe shade of السِّرحَتَينِthe two sarh trees تَنَزُّلٌa sojourn
لَبِسْنَاwe donned بِهِthere بُرْداًa mantle مِنَof الوَصْلِunion مُذْهَباgilded
And I have a dwelling in the shade of the two sarh trees,
In the shades of the two tufts I find rest,
where we donned a gilded mantle of union.
We wore it as a cloak of union that disappeared.
يَرُوقُكَit delights you أَنْthat يَرْوِيit recounts أَحَادِيثَthe tales of وُرْقِهِits gray doves
وَتَصْبُواand you yearn إِلىfor الأَلْحَانِthe melodies شَجْواًin sorrow فَتْطْرَباand so you are enraptured
The telling of its gray doves' tales delights you,
You would enjoy if it relates the tale of its leaves,
and, sorrowing, you yearn for the melodies and are enraptured;
And you listen to the melodies pouring sadness and so resonate.
وَتَسْتَنْشِقَand you inhale الأَنْفَاسَthe breaths مِنْfrom نَسَمَاتِهِits breezes
فَتَفْهَمَand so you understand مَعْنَىthe meaning of الزَّهْرِthe blossoms مِنْfrom مَنْطَقِthe speech of الصَّباthe east wind
and you inhale the breaths borne on its breezes,
And inhale the breaths from its breeze,
and so grasp the meaning of the blossoms from the east wind's speech.
So you understand the meaning of the flower from the speech of the zephyr.
