    Come, for through love and passion I suffer

    a sickness of longing I know not how to cure.

    Grant me an eye whose tears reason can govern,

    or else a heart whose core patience can rule.

    My foot plunged into love without experience,

    so I found its sweetness pleasant to swallow.

    أُؤَمَّلُ عَتْبَاهُ وَأَحْذَرُ عَتْبَهُ

    It is honey mingled with poison and colocynth;

    I hope for its favor and fear its reproach.

    وَأَنَّي لِمِثْلِي أَنْ يَكُونَ مُحِبَّهُ

    I loved a beloved I am unworthy to love;

    and how could one like me be his lover?

    He is my heart’s crescent whenever I taste a brief slumber,

    and the dawn of my vision whenever I awaken.

    وَعَجْزِي عَنِ الإِدْرَاكِ أَوْلَى وَأَشْبَهُ

    I sought to comprehend, but fell short in awe;

    and my inability to comprehend is more fitting and becoming.

    وَنَالكَ طَرْفٌ أَنْتَ أَهْمَلْتَ سَحْبَهُ

    A heart yearned for you—you kindled its firestick;

    and an eye reached you—you let loose its clouds.

    Joy to this soul, if you are its beloved,

    and bliss to this heart, if you are its beloved.
